That's great but just like the black market one person gets one of those and gets on the plane and pulls the trigger from his pocket, down goes plane.

I never trusted one with electronics either, they will fail, they will smoke, and they can catch fire. Like all have said they normally fail all of a sudden, no signs what so ever. I like my 3rd gen and love it to death, but it does make me wonder sometimes. My old bronco you could hold the carberator open by hand and drive home, it was great. Yeah it only got 8mpg (not bad for the lift and tires it had) but still, it would run no matter what. Only 8 wires went to that motor, and it was so easy to fix. I'm hoping my 3rd gen lasts that long and that the electronics last, i can't afford one of these again. This baby is gonna last me a long time.

A simple search will get you a vast amount of designs for an effective EMP emitter.
They also have EMP gern (well you know what I mean) for crowd control. they can do as little as simple nausia, burst vessles to anursym's.

Talkin about electronic modules that just fail.. Raise your hand if your DuraSpark ignition ever just died on your old Pinto of Econoline Van.
I always carried a spare.
They always said "but you get 50,000 miles between tune-ups" but the modules were about $50.00 a pop. But the old Kettering (points, coil ign.) $5.00 bucks and you could fix it in a parking lot and gap it with your thunb nail.

Jim is right in one sence

I have seen a first gen at a fuel station once, Lemme tell yall the story, This was an old dodge diesel, probably the first unintercooled ones ever, single cab, long bed, deep dish tires on the rears, and the body beat the holy heck, Anyways i was fuelin up my old ford at the time, and the man turned that old truck on. OMG it sounded better than even my truck does now.. I walked up to him and complimented him on the truck, he said he was the original owner and that for 6 revoloutions on the motor, well it didnt run too bad....600K miles! All he did on it was oil change, the tranny went out twice, a couple of clutches as well, brakes, and differential maintainance, as well as lubrication when it was due..

However many of these 2nd gen 24V and even 12V engines are going strong as well, wasnt there one truck in the classifieds with nearly half a million miles and still running strong? A couple of guys have some really high mileage rigs in the 300k Plus mileage, i know of one that is a 12V with 360 on the ticker and still strong,

I have no doubt that the seemingly bulletproof design of the cummins will get better, and provided that dodge or some other auto maker keeps them, they will stil be popular and have a strong following, kinda like a good repuation, infact thats exactly what it is...

Im sure that even the 3rd gens will go over 500K no problem, But in the sence of how Jim thinks, nothing can replace an original..

Tx

My two cents on automotive electronics:

I have designed a couple of automotive ICs, and I will tell you that their quality standards are very
high (not as high as medical but...). However these electronics are getting more complicated every
year. Every automotive IC I have worked on required some type of volatile memory(flash, eeprom)
to bring better performance to the IC. The thing about flash and/or eeprom is that most only have a data
retention of 10-15 years depending on the technology. The data retention issue can vary with any
number of variables. Automotive suppliers usually shoot for 15 years, but we all know that at some
point the cicuit will lose its memory and the IC will most likely fail. And if the IC is saftey critical,
then cross your fingers that automotive designers have built in some redundacy.

This is the price we pay for smaller, cheaper and more compilcated electronics. I guess cheaper
for the suppliers not cheaper for us.

I agree, but then everything mechanical will eventually fail as well. I think the old 12v are outstanding. But I would much rather have a DD 50 or 60 series than an old 6-71. It won't cost you near as much in oil either. I've made my living the last 20 years working on mechanical equipment that has failed. I like the electronic's now days. A lot of times it can save catastrophic failures. Plus, if it's electronic's that fail than the Instrument guys work on it instead of me.
