how do i start a hauling company

Hello guys,

i would like to start a hauling company that moves small freight or trailers around my area. but i have no clue how to do it? i guess these are my questions...

1. how does one start a buisness in the first place
2. how much and what type of insurance do i need.
3. what are the going rates for this type of service
4. what additions to the truck are manditory for this kind of work, ie trailer brack, fifth wheel hitch, etc?
5. are there any down sides to this kind of work

i am hoping to do this on the weekend as i have a full time job during the week.
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

1. LegalZoom is a good place to start. They can help you with all the legal paperwork of an LLC, DBA, Sole Proprietorship etc...
2. Insurance is based on what you're hauling
3. No idea
4. Do you not plan on using your own trailer? If you do, just stock up on the stuff you need for your equipment plus a slew of chains, binders, and ratchet straps.
5. The downside is cut throat competition and rising fuel costs are gonna KILL your profits.

Search here for "hotshot"...My guess is you will quickly learn that you can not do it on the weekend and make enough to pay for the insurance.
