cow bell magic

to make a long story short
i was cuttin firewood today and i got to cut across this guys farm to hit the old railroad tracks cause the tressle on the other end is kinda dangerous and i like my truck too much
i have to open a gate to cut across his dairy cow pasture and cross a bridge to get over to the old tracks
keepin mind that the cows never go across the bridge cause cows dont like crossing things that they can see down thru aka railroad ties.
this guy has no fence on one side of his property cause its a 10ft drop to a stream so the cows dont ever leave the field
except today!
see i got this large cow bell under my truck attached to the frame and i was joking around making it ring when my buddy was closing the gate. these cows were looking at me kinda strange like
so i didnt think nothin of it
i came out of the woods at dark and passed the farmer and his son going into the woods on the other side of the bridge cause 2 or 3 cows went over the bridge into the woods
was it the cow bell?

they went over the bridge?! wow

here they used to make that kinda bridges, just to be able to pass over with trucks, but cows dont! with a foot or 2 above the ground, and when one walks over it, they slip in.

Once i found a tractor, lifting a cow outta one, and it had a broken leg

walked right ower the bridge and into the woods
the bridge is like a standard railroad tressle
if i were a cow id probably fall thru the beams

in the mts in hawaii they have grates cut in the roads ever so often so the cows dont walk down the roads?
thats what this guy told me when i was there when asked what the grates were

Most people call them "Texas Gates" lots ofthem up here in Alberta too.Keeps cows and horses from crossing until they fill up with snow in the winter.

I always refered to them as Cattle Guard gates.

And I always thought the cow bells were for the cows to wear so the owner would be able to get a general idea of where the cow was at in the pasture when he went looking for her? I may just be crazy!

Note to self: Commit to memory.

I'm not sure when or where, but SOMEWHERE, SOMETIME that line is going to come in handy. I can just feel it.

The reason cows have bells is their horns don't work.

Hmmm.....it's been a long time since I lived in the country, but I believe some cattle have learned to follow the "bell cow" back to the barn. Sounds like they thought your truck was the bell cow.

More like the cows thought that the sound of your truck meant that it was time to eat. A cow is ruled by it’s stomach they will follow the truck that feeds them anywhere.

The farmer may have been calling in the cows with a bell when he put feed out but it is amazing they would cross a railroad tussle . Cow bells were used to help find the cows as the days get shorter and it is still dark out when milking in the morning . In a large pasture I have personally looked for one milk cow when I was a kid for hours . On foggy mornings I really wanted to ring a cows bell many times . Till this day I still think the meanest thing you can do to a child is buy a milk cow and tell him it is his job to milk the thing morning and night . I had thought many times well growing up about telling dad how I had accidentally shot it during deer season .
