what tricks is everyone using?

one guy locally told me just to turn up dirt with a shovel, and wedge it down there?
that's only a few inches....?

They make a spade that looks like a hoe with the blabe turned down. Just push it in the ground and wiggle out your groove. Step and push on both side to close it up.
Five or six iches should be plenty deep....unless you plan on plowing it.

 

My trick, use a power edger like you'd use to trim the grass beside your sidewalk.
Set low, it'll cut a nice trench a couple of inches deep and about 1/4 inch wide.
You can step on the slit to close up the trench.
You could probably rent one for a few bucks for an afternoon.

I've done it several times to run communications wire for temporary events.
It also does a nice job when installing those low-voltage landscaping light systems.



PS DON'T try this if the ground is really wet......you'll make a very muddy mess.
(don't ask me how I know)

I was pretty much covered in mud by the time I had run the 600 feet of wire I had to bury/run for the following day's event. (I keep coveralls in my truck)

It was worth it.

The electric fence didn't work us. The dog got wise to it.

The collar beeped first as a warning, before it would shock, if he went any closer. What our dog would do is, is sit close enough for the collar to beep, and sit there. He'd wear the batteries down, then run across the wire.

He was a 12# dog, and had to set it on the highest setting.

Had to go back to a cable. He was a crazy mutt.

 

Run wire THEN hook it up.

 

The company that put mine down just used the edger like Ed said. Had the whole system in in about 2 hours total. Both the Rotties know exactly where it is and will not go close. The Shepard has ran across it several times chasing squirels but she is like a streak of lightning anyway. The pit bull hates it and knows exactly where it is. The one Rottie don't even need the collar any more, she won't go close the line. The other Rottie, I have to put in the car and drive across the line to walk her around town. She will not cross it no how. It is a pretty cool system.

 

Ok question I have always thought of...When the dog does pass over this line...cant they just keep goin?

 

could always rent a Ditch Witch..........might be a tad overkill though

 

skill saw and 2 blades does a nice job also.

 

With an invisible shovel??
