our year old house has a big porch, and it's not insulated (blown in insulation is not over there) over the porch.

supposed to be 2400sq ft, 4 ton Heat Pump unit.
it's a box house, 2 Br on one end (air handler is over this end) then the LR, kitchen, DR, entryway and all that.

and other end is laundry room, master bedroom, master bath, and FROG.

well, cool air comes out of the Master Bed & Bath vents, and you can't get it warm.

i cranked up the temperature to make it run longer (and hopefully heat up the ductwork) and it went to prolly 45% duty cycle (run 45 minutes, off 15 minutes)

and it still never really got WARM.
AC works fine in summer, keeps nice and cold.

can i just get some used blankets from Good Will and lay over the duct work?
or is there another problem?

 

I'm thinking that if the duct is in an area where the ambient air is very cold, the heat could convect (so to speak) off of the duct work and end up cool to barely warm when it gets to the register.

Is this standard sheet metal duct? If so, is there a way (reasonably) for you to replace it with the poly wrapped/insulated tube stuff, or is this like a main trunk?

What's a FROG?

 

it's the soft tube stuff, insulated looking.

yeah, if it was the sheet metal, i'd jump on that, but i'd think the soft tube would be more resistant to loosing heat.

try regulating the flow to the close rooms, closing down the vents a bit to force more air to make the run to the bedroom. if this does not work they do make in duct booster fans, they are/ can be temp activated, when they sense heat they turn on to help the air along its long run, best mounted about halfway to the destination. I oyour case it would not get warm enough if you mounted it at the vent in that far room. as for a source I would have to search for you or you could google it yourself................., might even be able to find one on ebay

 

Is the flow itself weak too, or is it aprox. the same flow, just cooler? Just wondering cause you mentioned the A/C seemed to be fine?

That insulated tube stuff is supposed to be good to go running though cool or warm areas such as attics and crawl spaces. I just automatically thought of a galvanized duct when I read it.
If the airflow was also recently reduced at all registers I would suspect a dusty/dirty blower fan. You'd be suprised what having a think layer of lint on the blades can do to rpm's/ velocity. How about your filter?

Other than that, this homeowner is useless to you.

A year old house? I would call the contractor and have the HVAC company that did the work come out & fix the problem.

this is SC, the ole fart who built the house is a idiot,
and the HVAC guy is twice as stupid. he put the outside unit on a slant, so it makes all kind of noises.

would NOT warranty his own work, wanted $65 hour to come LOOK at it.
my neighbor does HVAC, he got tired of hearing it INSIDE his house, so he came over and fixed it when he saw me monkeying with.

he told the builder, you gotta put 2 units in, you should do this, you should do that, then he found out the name of the HVAC guy, and knew it was a lost cause (the HVAC guy is a known idiot in these parts)

i wanted to do this on my own, but will call my neighbor tomorrow if no one figures it out on here.

Maze, good plan. we already closed off 3 of the rooms (2 BR & Frog) and keep doors shut.

PJ, changed filter last month, but did put in a "gauze" type filter to trap more dust (since the wife don't dust - do it my way)

i got GREAT airflow. the bedroom registers blow right in your face (from across the room) and give me a sore throat every night and freeze me to death.

i called tonite and put it up for sale
maybe Geico can move down here and be "warm"
our house in Omaha was warmer than this, and it's only 44 outside.
