My wife and I have been exploring different options to get our monthly bills down. One option that would help is to lower the high truck payment we currently have.

Now...I don't NEED a one ton truck and I don't NEED the mighty Cummins (although I sure have grown to love it). I rarely tow anything heavier than 3,000 pounds and my box is empty 99% of the time. My driving is mixed highway/city. Basically, I bought my current truck because it was what I WANTED. That said, I have to have a truck simply because I hate cars.

I've been looking at a used.....(gulp)....GMC Sierra Z71. When it comes to gassers, it is my personal opinion that GM makes a better vehicle then both Ford and Dodge. So, if I'm gonna go back to driving a gasser then a GM product is probably what I'll get.

I found an '02 that looks pretty clean for $16K (that's what they're asking but I think I can get them down lower). Problem is that it has 86,400 miles on it. I realize that's a lot of miles, but I also realize that there could also be a lot of trouble free miles left on the truck.

So....I guess here's where I'm asking for you input. First of all, is it stupid to even look at a truck with 86,400 miles on it? Second, from what I've found on Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds.com, $16K is a pretty good price (lower than both listed for dealer retail). What do you guys think would be reasonable for me to get the dealer to come down to?
2002 GMC Sierra Z71 with 86k miles for 16K? You can find an 01-02 Dodge Ram with a Cummins for that price. For all intensive purposes an 02 Dodge is an 01 Dodge (minor differences).

My 01 was 14.5 with 160K miles bought a few months ago. Add a couple grand onto that, and you've got an 85K mile old Dodge truck. Not sure how you could even compare the two?!

I decided to stay with Dodge and haven't regretted it. But I traded for a totally different reason. Dealership gave me 26,600 for my '03 vibrator and I got the $3750 rebate for a $2,000 difference. I could not let that offer slip by. I reduced my payments $94 a month and didn't write a check for the purchase. After towing our 5th wheel with the Dodge Hemi 5spd auto, I'm glad I went the way I did. No vibrations, plenty of power, mileage ain't too bad, and lower payments with no down payment. Yeah I know I'll take the hit if I trade back to a Cummins but that might not happen if DC doesn't do better than they have with the 3rd gen.

I don't need a one ton pickup either.. that's why I got a 3/4 ton

It does get appealing sometimes to think about a smaller truck or suv that has a tight turning radius and great mileage.

Then you pull up next to me with my 6" tip in your face and.... you

Around here at least, CTD's with less than 100K miles are over $20K. For that price it would make more sense to simply keep what I have. I've looked extensively for an '01 or '02 CTD with less than 100K miles on it. They're not hard to find, but they're more than I'm looking to pay. Most folks seem to hold onto them until the wheels fall off (and I prefer to have the wheels with the truck).

Hehehe....I will NEVER buy a mini van.

It's not so much that I'm asking anyone to make any calls for me. I'm just wondering how risky it is to buy a GMC Z71 with 86,000 miles on it. As I said earlier, I'm fortunate enough that I don't HAVE to do anything. It's not like we're drowning in debt. We're just trying to be good stewards.

That said, I just ran across a 1999 Dodge 2500 4x4 Extended cab CTD with 63,469 miles on it for $18,999. Carfax says it has 23 records, but I haven't paid for a full report so I don't really know what that means. Hmmmm......

Try this site for a truck. It's in Bonham TX. They have a lot of diesels, and get new stuff in all the time.

JKE,

Yes, they still do, but they deny it. Mo coworker brought his "sub" to the dealer 6 times for it, they call it normal. He now has an Excursion with the 7.3!!

Back on topic....what issues with a '99 CTD should I know about? Also, it's surprising to me that a 5-6 year old truck only has 63,000 miles on it. Ordinarily I would think that's a good thing, but it could also be a bad thing.
