For those of you using shotguns you would be surprised how effective just plain old 71/2 birdshot is at close range. Home defense is generally a close range affair. I did some range testing of dove/quail loads and at about 10 feet they would blow a hole through a solid core door. This is a very important factor to consider if you live in a normal suburban neighborhood. 00 buckshot in a 3 inch round has tremendous penetrating power, try conducting some tests yourself. Set up a couple of pieces of 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch sheetrock nailed/screwed to 2x4s or 2x6s, add some standard fiberglass insulation and then add several 1 inch pine boards spaced 1 inch apart behind that. You will really be surprised at how far the 00 will go.

Remember we live in a country run by lawyers and if they can figure a way to sue a gun owner they will. Additionally you don't want to be responsible for injuring a neighbor while taking out some slime ball.
Equalizer, you bring up a good point on the buckshot. Up until yesterday I had my 12 gauge loaded with "heavy dove" shells. However, if for some reason my wife is alone and has to use the shotgun I only want her to have to shoot once. A solid hit with buckshot will stop someone in their tracks every time. A solid hit with birdshot from close range will LIKELY stop someone in their tracks...but if they happen to be wearing a heavy coat or layers of heavy clothing then it may only slow them down. I don't want them to slow down. I want them to STOP.

I keep the shotgun around for my wife's use. I prefer the Glock. However, for a lady who does not want to practice shooting pistols, a 12 gauge shotgun is the best home self defense weapon you can have. Not only is it hard to miss with a scatter gun, but the sound of pumping the gun to load the shell will usually be enough to scare someone away.

My sidearm will be usefull until I can get to the shotgun.
Six No. 6 shells with 2 slugs and two 00 Buck in the built in the stock shellholders.
It will be VERY hard to miss an intruder with the 18 1/2 " open cylinder barrel in a 5 feet wide by 12 feet long hallway.
Of course we all hope it never comes to that.
(Clean-up would be a terrible mess, both physically and emotionally)

Doggie alarm (will wake me up so she can hide behind me), and I keep a flashlight and a .357 by the bed.

I didnt exactly use the best choice of words.....you can LEGALLY own them BUT they are a restriced weapon. I was just talking to a buddy that is an RCMP officer about this very topic.

I wouldnt want to be the guy that killed an intruder with a restricted weapon in this country. Two words....Maximum Security.

Outside, driveway gate and perimeter fencing electrically charged to 220 volts, home made land mines in the ground under all the windows, (shotgun shells-nail-rock arrangement, minimum 3 per window). Inside, 2 shotguns aimed at both doors, (total 4), with trip wires attached to the door ***** when I go to bed at night. If they're still alive after all that, they can have whatever they want.

Just kidding! I don't really have any of that stuff...

Or DO I? You be the judge!

Not telling all secrets.......but .......I don't go to bed with out it.........S&W 38 Special, loaded with hollow point ammo....within reach......no not on bedstand, first place intruder will look!
Oh let's not forget the pump 12 ga with the 00 buck that's ready to rock & roll.
If you come into my house in the middle of the night, you'd better be holloring my name and praying, because your gonna have lead poisoning real fast, if I don't recognize your voice.

Remind me to never move to Canada.....

No alarms here, and a dog that would sleep through a mortar attack. Fortunately, it would take making some serious noise to get into my house, but I'd still probably wake up before the dog.

I keep either the department-issued Glock 19, or my Glock 17 or Taurus M85 close at hand at night. I live alone, so anyone in the house at night besides myself will be found there in the morning.

I've never much liked the idea of using a flash light it gives people something to shoot at! I found out what those night sights are for.... finding your gun in the dark

On her side, a 38 special. On my side, 454 Casull. I know the 454 is overkill, but it is my favorite handgun...But I doubt I would have to use any of my guns, with a 217lb English Mastiff puppy roaming around the house.....
