Home Defense

This has been discussed here before, but I was just curious about what some of you guys do in the interest of home defense.

I live in a good neigborhood, but with so many crazy people running around these days you can never be too careful.

At night, aside from good exterior lighting, we have an alarm system that will sound and notify officials if any exterior door or window is opened. We also have two large dogs (a 120 pound Great Pyrenees and a 75 pound Black Lab) that stay in the house with us at night. Both are very protective, but the biggest benefit of having them is probably their loud and intimidating bark. Should someone make it past those, I keep a .40 caliber Glock on the nightstand next to my bed (this is my concealed carry gun so it goes to bed with me at night and leaves with me in the morning). Also loaded and ready for use by me or my wife is a Remington 12 gauge with two 3" 00 buckshot shells loaded in the magazine and 6 more waiting on an elastic shotgun shell holder on the stock. My wife knows how to shoot both.

I have other guns in the closet but they are not loaded.

With all of the gun nuts on this site, I thought this might be an interesting topic.

So...how safe is your home from intruders?? Alarms?? Dogs?? Guns?? Lighting??

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention the Surefire 6P flashlight I also keep by the bed. That thing will temporarily blind an intruder if you shine it in their eyes.

Rem 1100, 22 cal bolt, 45 cal llama, motion lighting, 3 dogs, a mean burro,3 stupid horses, 2 attack cats and finally, one grumpy woman when woken up in the middle of the night Where I live ,anyone stupid enough to be snooping around unannounced would probably get shot or attacked by the dogs. Not to sound like a yahoo, but the local law is at least 30 minutes away, so we need to take care of each other and most all participate in local Ranch watch program and that kinda stuff.

Lets see, Colt Government model .45ACP with 185gr flying ashtrays, Winchester 1200 Riot shotgun with 3" 00 buckshot and a 7.62mm L1A1 with a Trilux scope. That should cover all the bases.

Remington 870 Magnum Express 12 ga - short barrel no choke (mine) on wall next to bed

Remington 870 Magnum Express 20 ga (wife's) on wall next to bed

Alarm system

20 lb black tomcat, with full claws and a crappy attitude

2 Shelties (noise, but nothing else)

I have kids, so no loaded guns in my house.

Except the .380 PPK daily carry, and that one goes in the underwear drawer at night.

12ga single shot shotgun, 22 rifle, 22 pistol, 9mm and .357 magnum in the gun safe.

2 declawed 30 pound attack cats, one big like Scotty, the other big like Oprah.

20 year old blind and deaf Cocker Spaniel.

10 year old, just had 5 puppies, droopy boobed Beagle.

Alarm on all doors and ground level windows.

Never had a home breakin in this neighborhood, but plenty of vehicle breakins and vandalism.

We have an alarm that calls the monitoring company, sounds a siren, and flashes all the X10-controlled lights in the house. Two bigger dogs outside along with good lighting. Two small emergency backup dogs inside , one of them really cranky about suspicious noises. Browning A500 with 00 buck and a .357 magnum revolver for armament. We're still renovating, so consider pipes, saws, hammers and the like to be weapons as well. Oh, and I forgot to mention the old place was built in 1899, so the creaky floors and stairs are a built-in alarm system.

Ive got a 14" stick (hammer handle actually) and a loaded 3D Maglight....purty scary eh?

What can I say we arent allowed to have handguns up here.

Many people around here dont lock their doors and leave their keys in their vehicles.

Those Maglights are pretty effective "attitude adjustment" tools. I have them scattered all over the house, and a 6D in the truck.

too many guns to list.... I'll just run the size numbers....9, 10, 12, 410, 22, 45, 380, 357, 38, 40, 3030, 30-06, 44, etc. ...

the area isn't that bad, we still lock up when we leave but it's rare to hear about anyone breaking into a house in the close area. One nice thing is that three of my close neighbors are retired from either the military or police force, so they are always on the lookout for anything suspicious, and there always home when I'm not, so I feel that they "watch" the house quite well....

I keep my 870 loaded with 7 1/2 birdshot but that kind of backs up the 2 inch 357 and the 45. Mustn't forget the 2 German Shepards.

For those of you using shotguns you would be surprised how effective just plain old 71/2 birdshot is at close range. Home defense is generally a close range affair. I did some range testing of dove/quail loads and at about 10 feet they would blow a hole through a solid core door. This is a very important factor to consider if you live in a normal suburban neighborhood. 00 buckshot in a 3 inch round has tremendous penetrating power, try conducting some tests yourself. Set up a couple of pieces of 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch sheetrock nailed/screwed to 2x4s or 2x6s, add some standard fiberglass insulation and then add several 1 inch pine boards spaced 1 inch apart behind that. You will really be surprised at how far the 00 will go.

Remember we live in a country run by lawyers and if they can figure a way to sue a gun owner they will. Additionally you don't want to be responsible for injuring a neighbor while taking out some slime ball.

You must be a Democrat, twisting quotations around like that.
