Turbo's can get that hot, and that one very well might be, but with today's digital camera's things can appear hotter than they actually are. I think that when metals get hot their electrons get excited and create a whole spectrum of light, but they start by making infrared light before they make any shade of visible light. And digital cameras can actually pick up on the infrared light that we can't see, and then show it to you as red that we can see. They're not always the most accurate in that regard.

As for the turbo; is it actually a turbo and not some sort of big centrifugal blower? Is there an exhaust turbine on the other side and not an electric motor or belt pulley or something? I have seen turbos bigger than that for boats... What would that one be for? Locomotive? Mine truck?

And on another note, I really want the header on the engine picture. That thing looks perfect.

EDIT: Wait, the header has EGR coming off of it? Why would an aftermarket header have EGR? That [i]is[i] an aftermarket header, isn't it?

Ouch, My Buick T-Type use to make the old Terry Houston downpipe almost see through on a hard pass but I never noticed the exhuast headers glowing that bad.

Is it and egr or a wastegate of somesort?? Looks like it dumps into the downpipe... and egr would be heading for the intake right?

Oh, yeah, you're right... Now I see the valve for the downpipe.
I thought that the little aluminum-foily thingy behind the downpipe was the tube, I guess that's just the waste gate controller.

So how much would that header cost? $2,000?

(On another note, anybody notice how the rear cylinders seem to be hotter than the front ones?)

That's just an external wastegate. Header wouldn't cost that much. Maybe 600.

I'd like to hear that turbo with a straightpipe... except it'd have to be about 24" wide :P.

That is probably just a see through header..
You would think something that hot would find a way to wn-weld itself.
The High Heat paint on the valve cover seems to be holding up nicely though.

Wonder if anybody is really standing there taking that picture? The sound and heat would have to be intense, let alone the pucker factor what-if this thing explodes..

With the drive pulley system and the overdrive ratio on the alternator I don't think this would rev much over 8,000 RPM or the alternator would be spinning about a million RPMs.

But I have seen and heard DOHC Indy style engines screaming at 12,000 RPM's inches from your head.

The turbo looks like a big centrifugal blower used for processing or ventilation.

How about a low RPM DOHC?

I have personally seen a gas engine get that hot, especially n the engine dyno with way more load than it would ever see on the street. like stated I think the camera glorafies it a little but I have seen it before.
Im still kind of curious to know what engine that is. I cant identify it for the life of me, definately not subaru, its a 6 cyl, I would imagine either nissan or toyota.
an 12000 rom is not that uncommon in the 4 cyl drag world.

Photograph was taken with a slow shutter and probably no strobe to stop action or you could see some part of the pulley or even turbo stopped. Photographer knew what he was shooting for.
Also curious as to why the extra tension on the belt tensioner using a breaker bar and long pipe to the floor?
