Help on a new vehicle for my wife
My wife and I are thinking about purchasing a new vehicle for her and I would like some opinions from members here.
She is currently driving a '99 Suburban, and we expect to downsize to a mid-size sedan. As we are not loaded, price and quality are an issue. Neither of us has a intrest in anything in the Ford or GM lines, and we don't want to dish out the cash for a Chrysler 300.
So far we have looked at a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and the new style Hyndai Sonota. I told her that if she got a VW it would have to be a TDI, and those have an alarming price for one well equipped.
I am curious if anyone has a mid size vehicle that they love or they hate and why. Also real gas MPG results would be nice.
Thanks guys,
James

We had GREAT luck with our Stratus. Bought it new in 2001, only went back to the dealer for a loose headliner. 140K miles later, regular oil changes, new struts, (got 91K miles out of the oem tires) lots of brake pads and about 3 sets of rotors.
Never once left her stranded.
Tell you what though (all seriousness) the next car will be a Jetta TDI. Yes, the pricing stinks, and now I understand there is a wait. But take a look at the used Stratus Market vs. the used TDI market. Her car is about bottomed out, mainly because of mileage at around 3 grand. A used jetta TDI with 100k miles goes for about 10 grand (+) depending on condition.
It's almost unbelievable, the VW's hold value like Mercedes or BMW. We have chewed on this for over 5 months now and the conclusion is Diesel. Add up the 48 mpgs, and CRAZY resale values and the decision is an easy one.
Also, my mom just got a Civic Hybrid, nice car too. Not getting the 50 mpg's she thought it would,(41-43) but it only has 800 miles on it. Suprisingly roomy and it HAS to be sweet on brakes cause it about stops itself with whatever kicks in when you apply the brake pedal, the charging system I guess.
(Shuts itself off at completed stops too, cool huh?)
I'm afraid of Hybrids, I'll look into them in 2015 when they work the bugs out.

I am looking for a Jetta as well. I wanted to buy one 6 years ago, but the wife wanted something more sporty. Guess what? She bought a Jeep Wrangler that achieved a whopping 16 miles / gallon. Now that she is no longer in the picture, i will be on the search again for a TDI.

are you wanting a car or suv?
As a Nissan owner, I would say go with the Pathy or a Maxima, both are good milage vehicles. If you need more of a truck (Pathy is sub framed), the new 05 Xes are pushing 22 mpg on the 4.0L V-6.
I am not much of a "domestic" fan in the car market.
