Help! Brush hog broke down...

Have a brush hog, hit something (rock??), bent one of the blades driving it through the deck. Took the BH off, turned it over, and need to remove the center hub to get to the blade for replacement.

How do you pull the center hub? Do I need something like a steering wheel puller or what? The nut came off the shaft as expected but the hub is really stuck on there.

Thanks for the advice, no need to be kind, my wife is having a good time with this one.

Jim

How big is this brush hog? 5 or 6 feet? The hub is probably on a keyed tapered shaft and is locked on there, you'll need a good sized puller and hammer to shock it loose.

There should be a plate on top where you take the nut off the bolt holding the blade on from the top, you might not be able to turn it to the right spot if the blade is jammed in the deck.

Thanks, Mike, that sounds about right. Will have to see if I can find a puller.

like was said its probably keyed or splined. i've never had to used a puller. try turning it righ side up and beat down on the stump-jumper (or hub) through the blade bolt cover alternating sides or hoist it up while its at an angle put the nut back on but leave loose and give it a good wack and i mean a good one with a real sledge.

Must be that time of year. My stump jumper fatigued and broke on mine and left the center section still on the gearbox shaft. The puller and PB Blaster didn't work so I'm going to a bigger puller and the torch Saturday. Nothing a little heat won't fix.

Rosebud is your best friend on stuck parts, just don't get carried away and make things red hot.

Look at the actual name...it's brush hog, but people refer to them genericly as bush hog.
