Handheld GPS

Anybody got a suggestion for a reasonably priced handheld GPS? Looking for something to take on trail rides so we can find our way back to camp....

Thanks y'all.

I've got a garmin etrex dosen't do mapping, but I use it for hunting so I can find the truck when it gets dark out. I wish I got one of the mapping ones, and think I'll up grade in the near future.

I also use a Garmin map 76cs. It works great. Not the cheapest one out there but it has the features we needed.

Got a Garmin GPSMAP60Cs. Was about $500 new. Very nice unit, similar to the 76's mentioned above. The 76's float and have more memory.
One thing to consider, for almost any unit you buy, you will most likely end up dropping about another $100 on software if you want detailed maps.

I have a Garmin Foretrex .... I found this one so I don't know how much they cost. It straps to your arm so you can be on the go. Seems to work ok for what I do.

I have the Magellan explorist 200. It was about the cheapest model with elevation. Works great in the boat and the desert and has even helped me in phoenix and Vegas to avoid some traffic situations with it's built in maps. I wasn't sure if I really wanted one, but after using this one I wish I would have bought a better optioned unit.

I have the Magellan Sport Trak Pro and I love it. Got it at Costco a few years ago and it included everything to use power from the vehicle, a holder for putting in the vehicle, Magellan map software. Don't remember what I paid, but it wasn't all that expensive.

I use mine in the vehicle for fun and also use it for geocaching.

For what you discribe, if it is mostly off road trails the little etrax will work well. It is about $99.00. Company issued them when I worked. It also worked in the company van if you put in distination, it would point the direction. Also if you have a cell phone, some have gps capablity.
Have fun, and don't get lost. A hand held compass iand a map a good to have in the in the wilderness.

Thanks for all the replies fellers. I'm in pretty much the same boat as scottsjeeprolet, just want something that'll get me back to camp, or keep me pointed in the right direction if I have coordinates for where I'm going.

Don't slight yourself too fast. The prices are much lower than they used to be, and they have many more features.

Once you start using it, you may find yourself wanting to do much more with it.

I have an older Garmin 76S and love it, but have been thinking of upgrading to the newer color version of it.

I been looking at them, had a few in my hand and thinking about buying, but I know the woods well I go in, but now that I am part owner of some new land in an area I am not familiar with I may need to finally buy one, it would also be nice to see if my recal on tire size is right..... I think the 100 buck ones have me hooked on price, but at the same time I don't want cheap getting me lost!
