I don't have one, but am thinking about applying for one. My buddy here at work has one, he's at the range at least 3 times a week shooting silhouettes.

Tony

Re:? for guys with C.C.P

I shoot pretty often, all shapes and sizes of weapons.

Don't even think of carrying a gun if you do not take the time to shoot it on a regular basis. That applies to your safety as well as everyone around you.

God forbid you ever have to pull it and use it, but if you do the only thing you will have going for you is your training.

Nerves get rattled and your thinking process is really challenged at a tense moment, and as such you need to be very familiar with the handgun even more so in a danger situation.

I am sure many of our fine Police officers who frequent this forum can tell you they have to qualify a couple of times a year. Some departments require it even more often.

The best advice I could give you ED, is to shoot often and shoot at least a full box each time you go to the range. If the weapon is of good quality, you will be helping it to loosen up and become a better "tool" for you.

If you have access to a range nearby, I would go a couple nights a week, until you become well acquainted with it, then slack off to a more comfortable regimen.

I think once a month will keep you in good shape, but most don't go that often. Just remember that you can't get too much practice with a handgun, especially if you or a family members life may depend on it.

Re:? for guys with C.C.P

Not answering your question, but I have to give props to our Gov. in CO, Bill Owens. We've got about 2 months in CO till the bills that our Governor signed goes into effect. Basically they take away the ability of cities to enact gun laws of their own. It was like traveling through different states just going through towns. You're subject to that particular towns laws. Now the state will control that, uniformally. Secondly, he took away the right of the Sheriffs to issue permits at will. It didn't matter if you are totally legal and pass your test, it was personally up to the Sheriff wether or not you got a CCW. The Sheriff here was not very liberal with them so I haven't bothered. I'll probably get one when the bill is enacted. The opposition is pi**ed off, the Gov said he would debate with them over this before he signed. He didn't. ;D Way to go! I'm sure we will have to fight to keep this on the books. We've got the great Wellington Webb, King of Denver, who is opposed and the other anti's. It's bad to bring up anything to do with gun rights advocacy in CO especially after Columbine. This is the first thing that's went our way since then. All of the law abiding people were getting our rights trampled by a few who never will give to nothing less than a total ban. I will never get how taking guns away from HONEST, LAW ABIDING, LEGAL citizens will reduce crimes! Don't even try to argue that.

Sorry to go off like that :-[, but WE win one once and a while.

Evan

I go to the local range every week end....mosty because I also reload and try powder and bullet weights for best grouping.....I also do long range pistol silhouette shooting...I am currently working on a bullet powder load for my CC pistol for max expansion at close range

The range is the best place to make drawing and using your pistol second nature....too many people that have a cc license never practice and I fear they could be hurt because of the fact they are not use to drawing their weapon in a conflict with an attacker

Also close range shooting (25ft) without using your sights is usefull....which happens durning a conflict with an attacker

Re:? for guys with C.C.P

Thanks Lary and Pappyman.
That's the kind of info I was hoping for.
I don't need to carry, just want the option.
I plan on spending several of my "Off" days punching paper before attending the class the end of April.
This class is not your "show up and pass" type of deal.
Here's what's involved.

Concealed Firearm Course

Cost $100.00. The 8 hour Concealed Firearm Course was developed around the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Course for Armed Security Officers and with input from the Fairfax County Police Department. The course covers the Virginia Concealed Weapons Law; federal, state and local restrictions; the Virginia law concerning the use of deadly force; firearm maintenance and safe storage; equipment and ammunition selection; proper loading and shooting techniques; and, concludes with a written exam. Upon completion of the course, graduates will also be eligible for a 15% discount off the price of an Annual Membership. The firearm proficiency portion of the course is a 60 round, 300 point modified PPC Course designed to give the student practice and experience in drawing and firing at a stationary target under pressure. The course is fired at three distances: 3 yards, 7 yards and 15 yards.

1. At the 3 yard line you fire 18 rounds
First Sequence of fire is to draw and fire 2 rounds in 3 seconds, this is repeated 3 times.
Second Sequence of fire is to draw and fire 6 rounds with your strong hand, reload and fire 6 rounds with your weak hand in 25 seconds, total 12 rounds.

2. At the 7 yard line you fire 24 rounds:

First Sequence of fire is to draw and fire 1 round in 2 seconds, this is repeated 6 times.
Second Sequence of fire is to draw and fire 2 rounds in 3 seconds, this is repeated 3 times.
Third Sequence of fire is to draw and fire 6 rounds, reload and fire 6 more rounds all with your strong hand in 30 seconds, total 12 rounds.

3. At the 15 yard line you fire 18 rounds:
From behind barricade you will be given 70 seconds to draw, kneel and fire 6 rounds strong hand, stand, reload, and fire 6 rounds weak hand, reload, and fire 6 rounds strong hand

Passing for both the written and proficiency tests is 70%. Within 5 days of successful completion of the course a certificate and training completion form will be issued to the student. The training completion form provides all of the information required by the courts to receive your permit and the certificate is suitable for hanging.

sorry for the long post. :

Sounds like a good course, that is the kind of training that can really benefit a shooter.

As a side note, I find many instructors are not impressed if you double tap two in the chest and one in the head of a silhoutte target ;D

No sense of humor I guess :

Re:? for guys with C.C.P

I go at least once a month, fire around 150 rounds from carry and home defense weapons, plus usually 2 or 3 boxes of .22. PA is easy on ccw permit, you just need a clean record, 2 references who will say you aren't a mental defective or a habitual drunkard (their wording), and $27. The sherriff must issue you a permit if these conditions are met, permits are not issued at his discretion.

Re:? for guys with C.C.P

I remember way back when, when I had to qualify on the M-16. All the shots were in the silhouette's face. The range master told me, after the first firing, that I needed to drop the site 2 clicks and move it to the left 3 clicks. I asked him why - since the 'guy' was already dead.

DW
