glow plug replacement 1989 vw golf n/a diesel

anyone have experience changing the glow plugs on a older vw golf?

had my friend who owns a shop change em once for me. was too busy working to do it myself so it was just soo much more convienient.

so my question. the first glow plug takes litterally 2 minutes to change. however by the looks of the rest you have to pull the injector lines and ip out to get to them. or can you squeeze them through?

advice is greatly appreciated.

Been a long time since I did them but on my '86, I think I could just squeeze them through w/o pulling the lines. Disconnecting, removing, and reinstalling the copper buss bar was the hard part as I recall. I think I slid the nut onto a rigid wire and put the tip of the wire on the end of the glow plug and then slid the nut down the wire onto the threads to keep from dropping the nuts when putting it all back together.

I usually use a flexible 1/4" driver for the nut and a little bit of goop to "glue" the nut into the socket. Usually it's a piece o' cake if they haven't been overtightened before. Take a good look at your return line, sometimes they get porous. This gives almost the same symptoms as dead plugs.

i replaced the glow plugs last season but i cheaped out on them. instead of buing the $15 ones i bought the $4 ones. it was working fine for the winter season but now im getting the same symptoms as before i replaced them. i guess i'll try your suggestions and keep you guys posted on how it went.
