Getting rid of poisin Ivy

I have a poison Ivy farm growing on my property. At one time I could purchase a good poison Ivy and brush killer. I can't remember if it was ortho or what but it was great. It had a yellow hose end sprayer with interchangeable bottles that clipped onto the sprayer. The bottles were purple and you could get fertilizer, bug killer roundup weed killer, etc... The sprayer had a tip that would fan out the spray. The cool thing was that you could remove the tip and now you could spray about 30' up into a tree to get those vines growing high in the trees. You could use it to kill off a Mesquite tree as well. Just hose down all of the foliage on the tree. It'll be dead by winter.
I've tried the hose end sprayer stuff that they sell these days. It'll make the stuff wilt but it never seems to kill it.
So what do you guys use??

If it is growing up a tree, cut the vine.
Over at the tractor by net site they are discussing it right now.
Use the spray that is available, but add 10% kerosene to it. It alway works for me.

I was gonna suggest the kerosene also. We used to spray paraquat on everything in the avocado groves, but its banned now. Adding a few squirts of dish soap will help whatever you are going to use stick to the foliage a little longer, too.

Nasty Stuff....
Used that stuff years ago when I was helping my grandpa in southern Indiana. We did a ditch bank walking up one side, by the time we turned around and headed back on the other side stuff we had already sprayed was curling. I went and looked at the container, it didn't say induce vomiting, call doc or anything like that, just skulls an crossbones an stating one swallow will kill. Thankfully they finally stopped making that stuff.

X2 on the dish soap.........

i USE THAT 2,4D stuff that you can buy at tractor supply. I mix it about 10x stronger than they recommend and use some dish soap. It works pretty good. It does take about 2 days though.

The dish soap is used as a surfactant.
Plant surfaces are oily, surfactants break this down, so the 'poison' ca contact the entire leaf.

Tordon with 2-4-D, available at just about any tractor or farm supply store, often by the gallon with an attached sprayer.... great generall broadleaf and vine killer, will take out poision ivy, poison oak and most noxious weeds, adn wont hurt grasses, and is non-toxic to pets after it drys...it will kill/damage trees however, so becarefull where you spray..
or use a dip rag( long stick with a piece of sponge or dishcloth on it) and wipe the leaves...

Oddly, I happen to not be affected by Poisin Ivy. I dug up and pulled every single vine and leaf out of our 2 acres several years ago, by hand. Maybe I oughta start a Poisin Ivy removal business.

It doesn't bother me much but my wife has to get prednizone almost every spring. She went to the DR for her annual dose last week. I'll get a bump or 2 that will itch a while. She gets big nasty blisters that literally drip fluid for a couple of weeks. She don't have to go outside either. It must pollinate and the pollen gets her!?!?!?

I looked up that 2-4-D stuff.
It has a really high environmental impact rating......Sounds like the stuff I want!!
I'll be heading to tractor supply or my local feed store to get me some.

I use Round Up, kills it deader than a doornail.

If you have issues with Poison Ivy ( as most of us do ), if you happen to know you were exposed, and can get to it in the first couple of hours, find yourself some soap called Fells Naptha. Works like a charm and has saved my tail numerous times, just was with it and water the areas......

What ever you use:

Read the label and mix/use as recomended. It's better to spray twice at recomended rates than once at 10 times the rate. Once you have it wilted spray again.

I've come in contact w/it clearing brush several times and use bleach on the areas...it drys it out and clears up in a couple of days. Now I can spot it w/no prob and spray it to get rid of it but this time of year it still grows back in some places.
