Fun Saturday project

It's almost April 15th, and in PA that means it's the end of studded tire season. So today I got to pay the price for running free Zamboni take-offs, I had to pull my studs. Not too bad, only took about 2 hours and gave me 3 blisters. I'll take that for a free set of tires.

They still allow studded tires in PA? They were banned in Minnesota quite a few years back. Too much road damage I understand.

MN is mainly flat, most of PA is pretty hilly. I guess we are willing to tolerate the road damage to keep traffic moving. Not a lot of folks outside of rural areas run studs though. I only ran them because they were already in the tires and it was legal to use them.

Only 4. I ran fronts a while back and found they would not hold up to the weight of the Cummins. The tires are Goodyear Workhorse "D" range in 215/85-16, the fronts got all tore up in about 10k. I'm running Hercules highway ribs up front for now.

If you have an ice rink local to you, find the maintenance man and buddy up. They have to replace the tires when the studs wear out or 3 studs in a row fall out, but the tires have never seen pavement so they are like new. The place I get mine has to pay a tire disposal fee if I don't take them, so they are more than happy to let me have the tires instead.

Move somewhere below the Arctic Circle. Actually that's the first time I've been in shorts this year.

How do you think they get new tires, without studs we would soon run out...
We are allowed to use them from Sept. 15'th to May 15'th, I have never run them but a few do, Our roads are pretty clear here in the interior because of the low humidity the wind will cause it to sublimate away fairly quick.
I bet they would make a nasty reload for shotguns...

Huh? I assume that studs are used like chains, but they stay in the tire, providing more traction.

I'm from the south, I've seen snow only a few times.

Quit playin with me, or I'll mess up your DTR karma!!!

Sorry....dry humor...they imbed the studs into the tires for traction...

I finally got it!!! Studs=NewTires. Man, I am so slow today.

wannadiesel: I did that with four 13in tires. Took all day and a twelve pack. You must have been drinking something better.

madhat: Glad you fessed up. I was going to mention the white stuff in your gallery photo.
