Fraud Call fron Ontario

The wife has a old 455 Riviera she has decided to sell. We have it listed in the local KY paper. Yesterday, I got a call on it, caller ID said Brampton Ont.

Lady was real nice and said she would send the proverbial bank check so I could have the money early. She would send extra $$ to cover sales cost and registration. She said she would have one of her "agents" pick up the car next week, and would I please give any extra cash back to the agent.

Tried to get her to tell me where whe was located. She just said " another part of the state". Asked her again and got some mumbled name. Asked for a repeat and got the same mumble. I never told her I had caller ID.

They are out there boys and girls. Don't get caught.

They must have cruised the classified adds by internet to find this one.

Can you say bogus check?

There was a doctor here in Nebraska that fell for the Nigerian scam last week, he lost $400K.

I still have the phone number in the ID. Anybody know who to call besides the local PD? Wonder if the phone company would have any use for it?

Ed

Or maybe one of our northern guys could do a reverse lookup and pay them a visit??????

Last year when I was considering selling my truck on ebay I received two emails wanting my truck. One guy was an 'agent' in Holland with a US customer. He was going to send his mechanic/agent to inpect the truck and drive it away. Even wanted me to make a hotel reservation for the mechanic. He said he was going to deposit the deposit plus some extra that I had to give to his mechanic for expenses. He kept on changing things and disappeared when I insisted on cash only in no bills larger than 100's or full payment in my account and verified by my bank.
The other guy was supposedly in Newfoundland and avoided my questions when I asked exactly where in Nfld. He wanted to fly down and pick up the truck as he had a contract that he desperatly needed the truck for.
On both of them there were a bunch of red flags and I got the security department of my bank involved. Not sure what finally happened but my bank did ask me to change my bank account number. They have kept the original account number open with a flag on it in case there is any activity.
So the bottom line is; watch out for red flags and get someone like your bank involved.

If they call using a Pre-Paid calling card, the Caller ID displays the number and location of the company not the caller.
They could be calling from anywhere in the world.
I recieved a call from Wifey while she was in Peru that also showed on the display as Ontario.

This could also be what is known as a callback system. I use that from Mexico and all my calls show a US number as I go thru a US area code. Its toll free for me to call this US number and then it dials the number I want at a much reduced rate.

I sold my 95 ram gasser on Autotrader. Months after the truck was sold and the ad removed, I received several calls from Alberta, Canada asking about the truck.

No idea how they saw the ad long after it was removed. I double checked the listing to make sure it was removed after I got a call a month or so after cancelling the ad. I ended up selling it locally, from someone who saw the same ad.

When something like this happens you can always report it to the Federal Trade Commission - incidentally, I know that they do work with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and investigate cross border fraud and other Commercial crimes:
