Flame throwing exhaust?
Flame throwing exhaust?
Well, the wheels are turning again for next years truck pulling season. I want to put on a show for the crowd most of all, and figure the rest will fall into place if/when I get it set up correctly. I figure 370's will roll enough smoke out the stacks, but I was thinking running regulated propane into the stacks and put a couple of spark plugs in the stacks. Or, my dad just got rid of his heater for his office, it's a wall mount I think it was 18,000 BTUs or something. But I figured I could take the regulator and entire assembly out of that and run propane up into the stacks and use the ignitor button to start them. Now my biggest concerns are will the lighted propane ignite any unburnt diesel coming out the exhaust? And do you think it will get hot enough to permanently discolor the stacks? Any certain safety precautions I should be aware of? Which would work better, straight regulated propane with a spark plug and coil or use the heater assembly?
Thanks in advance, this should look pretty sweet since the pulls are after dark!

Saw on TV where a Beemer had tubes on either side of the car under the passenger door that would shoot flames about 8' high out the side of the car. Too many highjackings in that area. It used gasoline and spark plugs. Wow, don't tread on me.
Can you imagine the feeling some idiot would have trying to highjack that car. OUCH

When I ran heavy equiptment years ago My toy was a Terex ts 32, twin detroits. That thing would blow a 4 foot high flame from the front engine under load with a cloud of black with it. Man that thing would get hot to be on for 8 hours. wish I had a pic to sent ya. pretty cool.

whats a piezo ignigter?
and yes, itll turn your stacks colors, 2 i havent had any problems as of yet with unburnt fuel ignighting. dunno if it doesnt get hot enough or what. i would say the carbon around the diesel pry keeps it from lighting? sounds good enough to me haha

Brings a big grin across my face
Did anybody see the fastest semi in the world run?? It has a shuttle craft rocket booster eng between the frame rails. It is incredible to watch. It blew half the pavement off the starting burnout traps and lit the pavement on fire.
It was incredible
I took the heater apart tonight and figure I might as well just go simple with a regulator and a spark plug. The heater had too many safety switches inside it. Now, since pretty much the only vehicle I've ever owned has been my CTD I am not 100% about the ignition systems on gassers. If I am correct, I should be able to take a coil for, say, an 85 Chevy 350 and it should just be one wire to the switch then to the battery and one wire to the spark plug, right? Then as long as I have the plug grounded I should be alright? I found an electronic valve for 30 bucks so this way everything can be turned on from the cab. Any and all advice is still welcome!
I rember at one of the events like that the anouncer said the exhaust is so hot it ignites the propane(can't rember for sure what fuel it was), of course their exhaust is probably a lil hotter than ours.
I think that the piezo would be easier too. A piezo is the ignition source for some fancy lighters, water heaters, and most commonly on propane bbq grills. You can get the clicker type or the type that is electric and uses a small battery.
