Fish finder Guru's

I recently installed a high powered fish finder on my boat and moved the weaker one to the transom for easy viewing while trolling. Now when I turn both finders on the weaker one will not register anything.

Both transducers are on the same side of the boat spaced properly and both finders are the same make Hummingbird. Either fish finder will work on it's own but only the the high powered one will work when both are on.

I've heard conflicting information on making this work ranging from moving one tranducer to the other side of the boat to buying and installing another brand of fish finder for the rear of the boat.

Any imput would be greatly appreciated

Rick

You are over powering the Weaker fish finder and confusing it with 2 signals. For best results always turn off the finder you are not using. If your main finder has GPS on it and you like to track your fishing area, you should be able to turn of the sonar portion and use just other finder no problems.

Guys if you are piloting the boat, calling out the depth every 30 seconds to you fishing buddies can become very monotonous especially over uneven terrain. Several boats here are running multiple fish finders (front facing and rear facing) to alleviate having to do this especially in Striper tournaments where multiple fishermen are on each boat.

I do understand why these fish finders do this but I'm perplexed as to how so many others are doing this with with great sucess.

Thanx for your replies

Rick

Oh, I see.....hmmm....hate to say "call humminbird" but they may have something for you.

are the fishermen adjusting the troll depth based on your callouts, or is it for informaitonal purposes only? Pilot should be following depth/contour correct? Just tell them to fish! just kidding

a few times, bass fishing, we ran a humminbird portable in back and a EagleII up front on the electric motor, with no interference.

My Eagle doesn't interfere with the simple depth reader in the dash either. sounds like beam width, power, or transducer location or maybe same frequency. Yeah, call humminbird.

Yes the other fishermen are adjusting per my call outs.

"we ran a humminbird portable in back and a EagleII up front on the electric motor, with no interference. "

It's probably a frequency problem requiring the purchase of a different brand of fish finder for the rear mounted unit as beam width adjustment does not cure the problem

I geuss it is time to go shopping!

Have you tried the powerful unit in the back with the old one up front? Just a thought.

I browsed humminbird's site with no real information...maybe turn some of the fish ID stuff on/off to see what happens.

There ought to be a fix, but that's not always the case, is it.

btw, my dad lives in antelope, ca and fishes all the time, and I mean all the time. I'll see if he has any ideas too. I think he runs just one fishfinder though.

Both finders have transom mounted transducers.

Both work but not together.

Probably using the same frequency.

Could be a transducer location problem. Can you rig up a pole mounted transducer and take it to the front of the boat, to try seperating the signals?

Are the other guys running multiple transducers? Where are they located?

HB says that the side scan transducers should not be mounted next to another transducer, so maybe your 2 are simply to close, even if they are not side looking.

more brainstroming to come

Just tell me when to stop...I know a more about fishing than I do my new truck, so I hope I gave you some fresh ideas.
