Fire safety ad ideas needed

We recently got a grant to spread the word about various aspects of fire safety via the media. Seeing as how one of our sponsors is a TV station, we're getting a great deal on the production and airing of the segments we'll come up with. (There will be 5)

The posted video is what Fresno did and it was a great success fro them. We'd like to stick with something similar as we feel the humor attracts positive attention while still delivering the message. What I need is some fresh ideas about fire safety.

Yeah fresh...hmmm...fire has been around for a long time...don't get burned.
Scott could wear his traditional cave man gear and he could 'make fire' Have his back hair and braids ignite. Then tuck and roll.

"Don't do this at home"

Seriously, its a tough thing for me to poke fun at because of how serious the results are from fire. Unfortunately a lot if society is so desensitized its hard to catch the audience and convey the msg.

Up here we have nasty pictures on the cigarette packs...pictures of black lungs and all the extreme results of smoking. It did nothing to reduce the sales of our ten dollar a pack smokes up here so it might be tough to put something together that reaches the audience.

Maybe the cave man idea is a good one and it could convey the dangers from day one.

Is there anything in particular that they want to promote like the Fresno Sprinkler ad or is it just general fire safety.

It does have some potential. Or you could put a caveman in a modern day house. He could than violate some of the basic rules like unattended cooking and using heat devices improperly. Or not. Somebody on DTR must have some good ideas.

There will be 5 ads, each centering around a different message about fire safety.

This may not be what you are looking for but I remember when I was little there was an old man that called himself smokey bear at this place we would go camping, he was one of the park rangers and would gather all the kids around a campfire at night and give lectures on fire safety, each weekend there was a different message that encompassed everything from matches to kitchen safety.

The company I retired from had safety meetings to promote not only for work but home. You could tell some presentations made them laugh, but the group had a hard time holding to the topic when most wanted to shoot the bull. (after a while, people become numb to anything)

We had a movie presentation about fires in the home and how it effects not only victims, but their families and life after the fire. The spokes person was the burn victim. During the video clips and his presentation, the audience held their attention on him. Not because he was disfigured, but they now had actual proof what happens during and after. Also, he was very in-depth on how it effected each person in his family.

Keeping it light hearted is great, but will it stick in their minds ?

Light a burner on your gas stove then hold everyone's handover the flame while stating, "this is fire and this is what it does".

Let us know how that works out for you.

Good luck, this subject has been beat to death, and in my professional opinion, people could not care less until it affects them directly.

And you are 100% correct. BUT...
I wanna be the guy that changes that mind-set. And I WILL be!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Very much appreciated.

Lary, yeah, I see a future for you too. Just not in advertising.

How about a cartoonist? One of my favorite Far Side cartoons, is when Thag invents fire and a bunch of cavemen are running out of the Acme skyscraper as it burns up. Could have something animated for the commercial.

While this may not be related enough to use it has always bothered me that people handling and transporting hazmat require training and certification but the public remains clueless . I think as a very minimum all drivers should be taught to stay clear of placarded vehicles involved in accidents and to give the UN number when calling 911 to allow responders to arrive better prepared .
While unconscious occupants needing assistance in placarded vehicles shouldn't be ignored those potentially assisting should be aware of the danger .
You might also show the proper use of a fire extinguisher , aiming at the base of the flame rather than aiming down on the top of it and which types of extinguishers should be used for which type fires .
