Found a killer deal source on bestbuy stuff (not hot, no worries). Which of these 2 is better?

I would imagine the first one is the best bang for your buck. Here is the deal though. Not a single one of those radar detectors will protect you unless you happen to run into a police officer who keeps his radar on all the time.

Where I work, none of us do that so no matter what you have running in your windshield, I'm going to get you.

It takes an average of 3-5 seconds for a radar detector to alert you of a signal. It takes my radar less than a half second to get you. By the time I turn my radar on and off, you won't even know I was there until you see my blue lights.

Ill probably end up selling it to a friend anyways....my last one sat in my middle seat for months before I finally gave it away.

I noticed with my old one (a cobra) it would go off and look up---theres the cop coming at me, close enough to radar.

I dont speed, just 3-5 over everywhere I go. On occasion I go a little faster when a good song comes on lol. But 5 years of driving and never been pulled over (so no tickets) (knock on wood) so I dont mind my driving habits.

I would get the 8500.
I've got both and I really prefer the 8500 over the solo. The screen is much easier to read and I have no need to run it on battery power.
If you can get it in RED led I would go that route as well. That's a personal choice but I prefer the red. I have a 7500 as well....it still works like a charm.
Don't buy any other brand!
For what it's worth, If you get Zapped by a lazer you're busted. You have a slight chance with instant on. You gotta stomp the brake hard if you're going very much over the limit. I've experienced that as long as I'm not more than 10 over I almost never get stopped. I had a state trooper stop me late one night for 8 over but I think he thought he was getting a DWI stop. He seemed disappointed after he walked away realizing that I hadn't been drinking.
I received no ticket on that stop.
The best way to run is to let someone else lead. I generally maintain an 8-10 over the limit average. If someone passes me at a higher rate I'll let them lead me about 1/4 mile ahead. Then if they get zapped (laser or radar) my detector goes off and I'm safe. They'll get popped but not me.
I've followed that rule and only used Escort for about as long as there's been Escort and have yet to get a ticket, come close a couple of times but no dice. Seen lots of other folks get popped. I just laugh when I pass them and their new friend.

I've read that they don't really do what they claim.

Those have been proven time and again not to work at all. Not worth the money. Basically, you're buying a box that does nothing but light up.

Yea my guess is that anything that is going to essentially disable a piece of equipment that any Govt. agency has purchased will be deemed illegal really quick.
Radar detectors only let you know that one is in the vicinity.

If you guys are looking for a way to "combat" being stopped for possibly speeding, one of the best ways I know of is to buy a C.B radio for your trucks and keep it on channel #19. The truckers are very good (in most areas) about letting each other know where the police are parked on the interstates usually giving out their locations by the "mile post markers."

One other point, many of the state police/highway patrol agencies use a speed measuring device called VASCAR. It stands for Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder. Basically,.....time and distance. In many areas you will see white lines across the interstates, near entrance ramps. The Trooper will sit on the ramp, watch those two white lines, check your speed as you "enter" and then "exit" the area between them, and VOILA,........he has your AVERAGE SPEED between those two lines. No beams, no lights, nothing.............. IMHO, it is actually worse than moving or stationary radar or even LIDAR because of it's "stealth." There is no way to pick it up.

Good luck.

So what happens to the cops reading if a driver has a radar gun, turned on an pointed toward the cops, You can buy radar guns all over the net.

Are you thinking that you want to try and jam it that way? Nothing will happen to the reading. There are a lot of factors that go into play. If you did that, for one you would have to make sure it's on exactly the same frequency as the one the cop is using. Good luck with that. If you have an X band radar unit and the cop is using K or Ka, it's not going to do you any good. Even if you had a K or Ka and were transmitting at the same time, it's still not going to affect him because he's looking for relative motion. You splashing a signal his way is not going to give him relative motion.

What John_P said x2.

With VASCAR, it's not just the white lines either. Could be cones, a tree, the beginning of a fence, a bridge abutment etc. You just never know when you're going to get nailed.

Funny thing is, I pace cars at night all the time. I'll drive right behind them and they never know I'm there. The best ones are the ones with a RADAR detector who have the look of shock on their face like you've never seen. As soon as I see it, i go back to my car and turn on my radar. Most of them will turn it off or pull it from the windshield. If I see a RADAR detector in your car, you're getting a ticket, period.

Your best bet instead of all this gear is to use common sense.

John is right. Channel 19 on the CB is better than any radar detector could ever hope to be, and you can use it in Virginia!

One word on the supposed "radar jammers". The FCC does not take kindly to people interfering with LICENSED frequencies, with unlicensed equipment.

In the USA, it is illegal to sell or possess any such products that transmit radar signals intended to jam radar equipment.[2] Actively transmitting on an FCC licensed frequency without a license is a violation of FCC regulations and a felony.
The fine per violation is on average, $11,000 or jail time.
