Entry into Canada?
Entry into Canada?
I will be going to Alaska at the end of April to work and would like to find out what I need to enter Canada with my CTD? All I can find is bring my drivers license, Photo ID such as a Pass Port, and a copy of my insurance. What I want to know is what I really need to bring and what not to bring? What can I expect the drive to be like? I will be going to Denali national park & Preserve.
Re:Entry into Canada?
Leave your handgun at home. Handguns in Canada are a big no no. You may bring long guns (rifles and shotguns) but none with a barrel length of less than 18".
You can expect a long drive no matter what rout you take. BTW What route are you taking??
Re:Entry into Canada?
I will be entering Canada at Abbotsford BC and then onto Hwy 1 and then to a bunch of other Highway's. Microsoft’s Streets and Trip's did my route. Trying to plan it all out in advance so I have no problems.
Re:Entry into Canada?
Been there twice, once just tooling around the country and once to buy my R model John Deere. Didn't get any hassles or nothing but leave the hand guns on this side for sure. Have a good trip.
Re:Entry into Canada?
From Abbotsford to Hope it is highway 1, four lane divided. At Hope Highway 1 changes to Highway 5 you will need to exit the four lane divided highway to stay on Highway 1. This is the only thing I think could mess you up if you arn't paying attention.
Hope, Cache Creek, Prince George, Dawson Creek (mile 0 Alaska hwy) Fort St John, Fort Nelson etc, etc. Is the most populated route and the easiest driving that has the most traffic. nice wide two lane highway's
Some "other items" i would use while travelling B.C's roads.... a C.B radio/and or cell phone, a pair of "deer whistles" mounted on your front bumper....and at least 2 or 3 jugs of windshield washer fluid. And of course, have your camera at the ready in case ya see Sasquatch! :

Make sure your insurance covers you there, mine don't. Also in the big trucks they wanted us to have our birth certificate. Sure wish I could work Denali for awhile. My partner is from Ft. Yukon.

Basically a declaration sheet (manifest) which lists everything you are taking with you. If you are bringing a camper it may be to your benefit to have the paperwork done before you get there. Or at least be knowledgable of it.

I think the paperwork also lists what you cannot bring over the border with you. Sort of a handy dandy checklist.

(One of my former bosses was from Canada...he gave me a few pointers to avoid the lengthy delays at the boarder).
Re:Entry into Canada?
He's going through British Columbia, not Quebec. Living just south of the border, it's never been a problem crossing north. While it's very true about handguns you might also extend that to include long guns as well. Going up won't be bad but you're going to return and you'll be likely searched at the US port of entry and they are very serious about such things. Second, I live in Bellingham, just south of Abbotsford. You'll be taking I-5 north out of Seattle then transitioning to what we call the Guide Meridian which takes you to the Abbotsford border crossing. From the south side of Bellingham to about the middle, the State Highway Department will be TEARING up I-5. It promises to be a mess of monumental proportions primarily because I-5 through this area is 2 lanes, each direction. Another point, I believe but can't swear to it, but I'll check for you, I believe that the Abbotsford border crossing is not a 24 hour open crossing. Perhaps one of our B.C. members knows. Border wait? During the week, about 8 am, going North, I've never had to wait more than 1 or 2 vehicles. We use passports to cross with. If you have one or have time to get one, it's the best piece of least questioned form of ID. Yes, I know, birth certificate, driver's license and similar are accepted but if you have a passport, use it. As a sidebar, if you don't get hung up on I-5 coming north, from Portland to Bellingham is about 4 - 4 1/2 hours driving time (strictly observing the speed limits, of course)

~Dave

One more thing about the ID requirements, it's not that critical going north, it's more so coming back into the US. Out of 6 or so times going north, I've offered my passport to the Canadian Border staff and only one looked at it. Coming back, the US Border staff not only checked the passport closely, but asked very specific questions and on two occasions, searched my truck (we were at high readiness, nationwide) and they were searching all vehicles ahead of me in that hour long wait.

~Dave

On a good note, I just sent off the paperwork for an Alaskan chapter of DTR. Keep an eye in the chapters area for information on it's whereabouts.

You will have Family when you get there
