Elk Hunting

Just got back from our hunt, and it was a successfull one. Tuesday evening I shot a 4*3 wieghing around 430 pounds giving my friend lots of crap being the first and the biggest in years. So I sleep in on wednesday go down and meet them and he is hooping and holloring he shot a 4*4 wieghing in at 585 pounds. I love when a plan comes together. We will be eating good this year. We had to pack them out from about 600 yards up hill on mine and about 900 yards flat ground on his, what a work out. We still managed to get them out hole, I know this will be the last year we do that. I am just to old to be dragging out that kind of wieght, we will have to 1/4 them out from now on. Would post some pics but can never get them to except them.

I shot a cow a few years back on a depredation hunt in the northeastern unit here in UT that I was able to drive right up to it. I still had to cut it in half to get it in the back of the truck. I was by my self and I am 250 lbs and 6'4". I tried very hard to get it up there, but just could'nt do it, finally gave up and started cuttin.

Wouldn't suggest trying to pack out a whole Elk. I'd quarter it even with mules. I'd like to see someone try to load a gutted whole Elk on a mule or horse. Or even into a P/U for that matter.

The trick to dragging any animal out whole is nose up, one hand on the horns and one hand on the front legs, clear all debree from the ground and pull. I am 6`4 and about 265#s and my buddy is about the same we have done this many times. I have deliverd kegs for many years, 2 at a time with handtruck wieghing in at aboout 400#s and taking them up flights of stairs and lifting them up on racks and shelves. Getting the Elk in the truck is tuff especially with the 6 inch lift, we use tie downs and lift, tie down and lift and so fourth. We are hunting in Oregon in the Union creek area.
