EBAY Scam Alert:
EBAY Scam Alert:
Ok a while back I had my account stolen on ebay.
I was able to catch it in time before any damage was done.
I finally figured out how they got it.
First the scumbag sends you an email through Ebay (you know contact member link). They send you the email asking if the item you are selling is the same as an item listed somewhere else....There will be a URL or link provided....When you cut and paste the url BAM they got ya!
Its a website that seizes information....
HEADS UP!!!
PS I got another one of these emails today and forwarded it to ebay. Here is what I got back:
"Thank you for writing eBay in regard to the email you received from this
buyer asking you some information concerning your item.
eBay doesn't allow members to offer to buy or sell items outside of
eBay. Doing so violates the eBay User Agreement. In this case, however,
we believe that the email may have been sent as result of an
unauthorized account takeover. We're in the process of determining who
sent the email. If an unauthorized person was using the account, we'll
restore the eBay account its true owner.
The Web site link in the email you received does not take you to a real
eBay page. Instead, this is a fake Web page designed to collect
passwords."

Yes, this is called a phishing site and is a common tactic nowadays. Make sure that any website that you enter information into is actually the website you're intending (i.e. if you're trying to log into ebay, make sure that it's an ebay address in the address field).
Yup. Within a day of registering on Ebay I had gotten an email saying my auction had been suspended for copyright theft and to click this link to solve it and that somebody had already paid for this item etc. It's complete BS.
Happens all the time. When you are about to click on a link in an E-mail, first look at the bottom of the window, it will show the URL to which it will send you. Unless the second level domain is ebay, never click on the link. Often they will try to use, like, links.ebay.xxxx.com, but it is not an ebay site. Another way to tell is to look at the E-mail header (View -> Message source). Look at the From field, it will tell you where the message originated (not the same as Reply-To field, which is what you see as From in your Outlook Express). If From contains name other than ebay.com (often looks like a simple IP address, or a dial-up account), delete the message.

I've been starting threads about this for a year, but it is good to see it again. Right now e-Bay is a HUGE risk to buy ANYTHING!
Even when the seller's ID says 10,000 positive responses his ID could be stolen, and you will be ripped off.
NEVER respond to any e-mail about ANY account you have. Call them.
