Ebay Scam alert or what?
I put my TS Ramifier on Craigslist-Ebay a few days ago and got the following response, which sounds a little weird to me. The person who sent it was “John Smith” hmmmm.
Anyways, here it is:
Please i will like to know if the above listed item is still available for sale ??? i will really like buy this TS Ramifier module for 2003-2004 CR Dodge Cummins - $100 urgently. So Please do withdraw the advert from Craigslist. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via certified cheques due to the distance as i am located in Florida.I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential or postal address
3.Your phone number.
**I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my shipper to come over as soon as you have cashed the check**
Have a nice day.
Scam alert or what? John Smith? I did not respond to his email, and will not.

Maybe he has a UPS account???
This is the only part of this that bothers me.
But if you actually get a cashiers check go and cash it for green and then you should be good. Don't deposit in your account!!
Get his phone # and call him.

IT IS FAKE. I sold a dodge dakota last week on cars.com. I also received an email very close to that. Apparently this is the latest internet scam going
http://blogs.cars.com/safe/
they offer to buy stuff and then some mysterious shipper picks it up

Of course I don't think that would justify engaging in any transaction with this guy. Just curious how that works. There is so much fraud going on these days.

Its a scam, I got about 2-3 of those emails a day when I had a listing on auto trader. I would normally respond that the truck was no longer running and was wrecked and they were still willing to pay the $14,000 asking price.
What they do is send you a fake check that looks real even to the bank tellers. They will give you the money but when the check comes back as being fraudulent the bank will come after you for the money.
This scam has been around for years. Its very similar to the ones where they say there client is interested in whatever you are selling and want to send you a check for way over asking price for you to pay the shipper.

The scammer gets a REAL cashier's check for a minimal amout, then "washes" the check, prints a larger amount on the check before he/she passes it off to some trusting "Mark" to purchase an item they had for sale.
If it doesn't pass the "Sniff" test.....run.

That's why I only buy from EBAY sellers with several hundred sales, and 90%+ positive comments unless it's something that nobody else has, and it's cheap enough that I won't loose my shirt if it goes bad.
I haven't been burned yet, although I know of a few who have been.

i got burned one time on ebay. The seller had lots of feedback with 98% positive. Three day auction for a Dewalt Miter saw. $450.00 or so. What a deal. Paid over the phone with debit card and was told it will be three days when I recieve it. A week later I get a couple of e-mails from some other ebay members. She told them the same thing. One of them called her back and she had claimed her father had been shot in the head and she will be getting his product out the next day. Checked the local papers and nothing. Scammed. Ebay was not very helpful either. Had to jump through hoops bend over backwards, and pretty much hold my ankles with them. Then they claim if my bank didn't reimburse me they would finally give me back $100. What a crock. The only way to buy on ebay is through paypal. They'll guarantee 100%.

FWIW, I received a similar email back in the day knowing full well it was probably a scam. They offered western union, so I figured what the hell I'll give it a shot. Two days later a check appeared for like 300 when in reailty the part was like 250 new. Called western union, verified it was legit, and had a 7-11 cash it. I got my money, and they got their way over priced part. Works for me
Just remember to use your head, and be cautious. If you deposit a check, wait 7-10 days.

usually,
the part is $1000
they send you a check for say, $4000,
you deposit check,
pay shipper $1000, send them the $2000 overage back,
and then your bank tells you the check was bad,
and you are out $3000.
they just did not get to that in the first e-mail...
if you can't spell - you can't buy from me....

whoa nelly!
don't give out your info either.... I had purchased a car in California then had to find a shipper. thousands of sites. some sites have phony compnaies that just get private info (this was through ebay too!!)
I added a misspelled road name , put in wrong birth date that sort of stuff. three days later no communication from the company but a phone call from a dealership confirming that my 'son' was purchasing a 4 wheeler in arizona.
seems one address was on the state line....
they acted friendly to the 'son' just long enough for the autorities to show up. it's a federal crime, I had to fill out 32 pages for internet criminal activity.
I have over 700 transactions with ebay , and four idiots. paypal and ebay were zero help, more frustration than anything.
always get THEIR phone number, any business will have a physical address.
ask what local bank they do business with so you can check on them. good guys never seem to mind. bad guys won't go through the hassle of having four friends to play phone tag and imitate different businesses when you can call the actual business.
as all above- if it looks too good (or spelled too bad) or zero info on the listing
get it in writing through the emails. or walk away. it costs nothing to click on the link that says 'report this site to ebay'
like the idea of computer yard sales, hate lazy people or scammers
