Dulpicate Perosnalized License Plates- What do?
Dulpicate Personalized License Plates- What do?
Well I now know for sure that some bozo in Southern California is running the same personalized plate that I have had for the last three years. On Oct 5, 2010, there was a parking violation and again on Mar 14, 2011 another parking violation. The first time I was at work in Portland, Oregon and the for latest one we were celebrating my step daughters Birthday in Reno, both places a far cry from San Bernardino county. I sent a letter regarding the first incident and not sure what to do with the latest. I thought they would verify that the license plate and VIN go together and not just go by the plate alone. The biggest glaring fact is that my truck is red and the have it down as white, color blind parking enforcement officer I guess...
Anyway called San Bernardino parking enforcement and they said I had to get a local San Jose Police Department report filled out for this. What a joke, after making me feel like the criminal, they didn't know what type of report to file. They recommended I go online and fill out a information report...I just can not wait for this low life in So Cal to go commit a bigger crime and then have San Jose's finest show up at my door step.
Any constructive thoughts on how I should go forward?

I think I would contact the state DMV and see if they're really is a duplicate tag that has been mistakenly issued. If their has been, and it just happens to be on a white truck, a copy of that info might be helpful. Second, if you have to deal with San Bernardino parking enforcement again, deal with a supervisor, not the front line folks. You want to be able to get back to the same person every time and it has to be someone who has the time to work the problem.

That would be a good step. Im not familier with CA DMV but its an unusual enough problem that if you showed up in person at the DMV they might run it for free and give you a hand.

Agreed ^^ Contact the DMV and see. Otherwise you'll be paying for that. Document all your conversations- who what when where. Failing that, contact your state rep and the attorney general.
Finally made it to DMV the other day and their records show that this plate was first used in 2006 and then surrendered or canceled in 2007. There is no good record on if the plates were ever actually turned in.
I was assigned this plate with a different background in Nov of 08. So, we followed up with the parking citation folks from So Cal and from their investigation they also now see two different VIN numbers for the same plate. They asked me to send a letter with a copy of my current registration and they will take care of it. I will be following up at the end of this month with them...
So now the question is, do I give up the personalized plate and possibly face more tickets in the future, or get another one? The plate in question is "CUMMNS"...or I could just save some money and go back to the California plain Jane plates.

We used to have black plates with white letters one year and the reverse the next, always getting a brand-new plate each year.
Later, they changed to white plates with blue letters and vice-versa, still getting a nice shiny new one each year.
Now, they let some kid at school win some silly art contest, and that is the license-plate that you will use for the next several years, each subsequent one gets more out-of-place, tacky, and tasteless.
To add insult, we no longer get a new one each year --- we sure pay enough to get new ones every month --- we have to use the same plate for several years, only getting a different color tiny sticker each year that goes in a corner of the plate.
The ones on work trucks are so beat up, bent, and rusty, by the time they finally issue new ones, that no one could read them ten feet away at a stand-still.
The artsy plates have become such tacky eyesores that I am often tempted to repaint mine plain old white on black.
They do offer a special plate that costs quite a bit more, plus having to pay this extra fee each year, even though we only get a sticker that goes on the old plate, that IS good old black with white letters and says something like I support KY COAL.
I never turned in any vanity plates when I lived in SoCal. I'd just tell the DMV I only had one and wanted to keep it and that was it.
I didn't have to turn them in in WA either.
Some clown is running around with expired plates and causing problems. He's probably in bigger trouble than that.
Stay on the tail of the DMV to get to the bottom of it and change your plates for a while til it gets cleared up to avoid any trouble with the law.

Yup. Thats what we go through too. In 1976 they came out with a great plate. Only issued it for that year. A plate I sent to a member who wanted one from AK awhile back looks like ants climbing on ice cream. I was glad to get rid of it.

Had this happen about 6 months ago. We received a letter from the city of Cleveland, OH stating that we had illegally parked a car on State St. and received a ticket for $55.00. After reviewing the plate numbers on the ticket it reveled the same plate number as our semi. That same semi was in Kentucky on the same day as the ticket was written and we had the log books to prove it. Plus the ticket said a blue colored car was the one parked illegally. After filling out forms and contacting several people we still had to pay the ticket
