Mornin

Sun is slowly poking out. Looks like a nice day so far. Touch of frost this AM but not bad. The trees have lost a lot of their leaves already and seems like winter is coming fast.

Had to go pick up some oats yesterday. Haven't picked up any for a long time especially bagged oats. Horses are going to go without if they get any more expensive. Have to start buying direct again if I can find someone that has oats.

Well have fun and drive safe.

Mornin...
Back at work, Mrs Mad still does not feel well, but better than yesterday. I re-enlisted this morning, pics and vid later. I'm mad, I stuttered one of the words on the re-enlistment oath...
Still counting the days... 18 left! It's going to be a long 18 days, too!

Need some liquid refreshment... coffee's a little weak.

Ya'll have a good one, I'll post the vid and pics later.

mad

Re-up pics... Those were the yellow footprints that I stood on when I got off the bus as a brand new recruit.

morning dog,
Got several leads, just waiting on people to call me back.
Saw several interesting ones out of Brazil. Rather hefty beasts @ 495 kg (~1100 lbs) each. They are for sugar cane processing , so they need to be strong. Prices weren't bad either. Converting the Brazilian Real to US Dollars made the price seem even better. Shipping might be another issue tho. Trying to see if there is a US distributor.

Congrats on re-upping. How many more did you sign for? Who is the blonde in the photo? Is that Mrs Hat? Sent you an email over the weekend, let me know if you got it or give me a shout at work.

Chad

Hey Chad,
I did not get the e-mail... send it again. Yeah, that's Mrs Mad. She's a good looking gal, I think, but I'll break peoples legs with their arms that I ripped off of them if they say anything smart about her...

Did I say 18 earlier? I meant 17... 19 October.

I, God, how I love Sorghum..... and you can't FIND it up here!

The cane is run through a roller press to squeeze the juice out.
The juice is strained and put into a long pan (2 - 3 ft wide x 8 - 12 ft long x 1ft deep getting shallower as it gets to the end).
A fire is built under the pan and the juice cooks for several hours.
In the end, you have beautiful sorghum syrup (known as molasses in some part of the country).
Take a big ole platter of cathead bisquits, real butter, and sorghum and you have a meal fit for a king. Other food products with it is optional.
End of lesson.

halfpint,
Just be patient. Hopefully, by this time next year, I'll have all kinds of sorghum slatherings coming from Weather Dry Creek. Still trying to find a press in good condition without having to float a loan to buy it. No presses have been build in the US since the early 40's, so they fetch a pretty penny. The sugar cane industry is huge in Brazil and they have some quality looking presses there. Looking at one that weighs in at just a hair under 2000 lbs. May have to go that route. Prices don't look bad either.
Just about got the evaporator pan built and will get a buddy of mine started on the firebox soon.
Looking at planting about an acre the first year, maybe even 2 acres. With that, I can do up a DTR Special Sorghum Syrup. All natural with the color of 5000 mile engine oil. Couple that with some bisquits or cornbread from the flour and meal I make, all you need is a stick of real butter.
Bulk sorghum and honey is going for $10+ a quart at places like Wild Oats. And thats BYOC (bring your own container).
Maybe this time next year, I can invite all the DTRonians, within a couple hundred mile radius, over for a long weekend of sorghum cutting, squeezing, cooking, and bottling. Beer and iced tea will be available.
Gotta git. Need to have boots on the ground at the shop at 0400. Got a long day ahead of me.

Coffee smell floating though the air early today. I guess it's about time to wake up sleepyhat, he's got boys to break and men to make. Wake up, coffee's on four scoops extra strong!!! Y'all have a great day!

Hat, congrats on the re-up!
