That's good! We call it the 'Main Breaker' around here!

Late morning all. Had an early dentist appointment this morning.

Today is Monday, December 14th.

On this day in 1799 - The first president of the United States, George Washington, died at the age 67.

1819 - Alabama joined the Union as the 22nd state.

1896 - Gen. James H. Doolittle, who led the first air raid on Japan during World War II, was born.

1900 - Professor Max Planck of Berlin University revealed his revolutionary Quantum Theory.

1903 - Orville Wright made the first attempt at powered flight. The engine stalled during take-off and the plane was damaged in the attempt. Three days later, after repairs were made, the modern aviation age was born when the plane stayed aloft for 12 seconds and flew 102 feet.

1939 - The Soviet Union was dropped from the League of Nations.

1945 - Josef Kramer, known as "the beast of Belsen," and 10 others were executed in Hamelin for the crimes they committed at the Belsen and Auschwitz **** concentration camps.

1983 - The U.S. battleship New Jersey fired on Syrian positions in Lebanon for the first time after American F-14 reconnaissance flights were fired on.

1985 - Wilma Mankiller became the first woman to lead a major American Indian tribe as she formally took office as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

That is all.

The locomotives I've worked around usually are kept running all winter unless they are parked in the heated shop. We had one with an auxilary unit on it that would run to keep the water warm, batteries charged up, and the lube oil warm.

Some of the newer ones have autostart features, they'll shut down when idling for so long. They will restart themselves when either the water temp gets too cold or the air pressure drops to a certain psi.

I have worked on one locomotive that had a block heater, it would only be ran few times a month in the winter so they kept a heater on it. You can't leave them shut down in the winter for too long or the water in the cooling system will freeze the block up. The cooling water is just regular water with a corrosion inhibitor in it.

Starting one is easy. Make sure the starting fuse and main batt switch are in first and the unit is in the start -stop position. If it has sat for a few days you open all the test ports on the side of the block and blow out all the moisture in the cylinders. Close the test ports. Prime the fuel sytem, when all the air is out you flip the switch and start the engine. If the come out of long term storage they need to be prelubed first.

No. It was 33 this AM when I left for the dentist and it's stayed right around that or just above all day. The roads that weren't plowed real good were still slippery. They're saying that it may get slippery tonite when all the slush/water re-freezes and we may get snow showers. Snow showers for the rest of the week with a 'small' storm thrown in on Thursday and Saturday for good measure.

Just came in from the lanai - - laid out for about one hour for some suntan, dip in the pool, watered the flowers, orchids are blooming, everything green and growing. Sorry about that garbage up north - - Marc, I expect that, but Claude, sounds like it is more than you need. It was 81 out there today - - had the overhead fan on to keep the breeze blowing - - nice little snooze.

Finished the last pageant performance last night to an energetic packed out house. Went well considering we were running without two of our amplifiers which went out the first night. Even the animals behaved themselves and didn't try to steal candy from the kiddies. So, now I can get caught up on stuff way behind - - got lots done this morning.

OK, grabbing another cup and out of here.

Bob

If Heidi is going shopping maybe she can pick him up an extra hamster. He uses the same one to power the chain saw. When cutting wood, the kids don’t get to watch TV. Just checking in--saw the lights were on.

Yup--that did it! Actually had some K-crab in Reno a couple of months ago. Wife had entered one of those free drawings at a casino and won a free meal. Otherwise, cant afford it.
