dog pulled out stitches...help!
dog pulled out stitches...help!
My Mastiff went in for a bone biopsy last Thursday and he pulled his stitches out today. Now he has a gaping wound (3" long & to the bone) but its not bleeding. I called the vet and they said stitching him up isn't necessary because he's not bleeding. I plan on getting some antibiotics but other than this what can I do?
I will find out this week if he has cancer...

Very sorry to hear about your pooch. I know it's like a member of the family.
You could super glue it together, just put some ice on the wound for about 5-10 minutes to numb it up. Or, just wrap it really well. Give that boy a jack and coke, let him rest...

I would clean it and then reclose it with Steri-Strips or Butterfly bandages then cover it with an adhesive bandage. it is hard to keep them from licking it because it probably itches, but their tounge is dirty
You could check the pet store for herbal tranqualizer to keep it calm for a few days.

Go to one of those big pharmacies they sell those strips that have the special adhesive and add a drop of crazy glue on each side of the strip. Use hydrogen peroxide first to sterilize and clean it out. After that wrap it with gauss loosely to avoid restricting blood flow and get one of those dog hoods at Petco or elsewhere. Had a mean coon get my beagles leg and you could see every thing down to the bone and it healed fine after a few weeks. He has a small line as a scar and he now just keeps the coon distracted and waits for the Jack Russel to go in for the kill.

I wouldn't close it, it could cavitate from underneath and rot. It need to drain. If it's bad enough that you want to bandage it, change it daily. Add peroxide either way (he will hate this).

The plastic cone is the best solution for keeping him out of it but stay away from aspirin or any drug that thins the blood. It may promote bleeding the the site and then you'll be dealing with infection.
Thanks for the help guys. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but it just about makes want to puke when I see it. I guess dogs are tougher than wimpy ole me. I'm waiting on a return call from the vet to see what drugs I can give him...we might just get liquored up tonight and have a good time if they say nothing.

I think my dog was on Tramadol and Rimadyl after his surgery for pain. Definitely put that lamp shade on him or else it'll never clear up and heal. Might keep an eye on the other dogs to be certain they aren't licking at his wound. Dogs are nasty
But actually, there are beneficial bacteria in a dogs' saliva that promotes healing to some degree. The only problem with that is, they don't know when to STOP, thus keeping the wound open instead of letting it heal.

Now, when they roll in poop and eat it, mashing it in between their teeth, I would suggest it is NOT beneficial bacteria
