do-it-yourself bedliners

I've searched and I know that the do-it-yourself bed liners generally aren't the best option and won't stand up to abuse like Line-X, Rhino, etc. But what about for light duty stuff? The worst my truck sees is the occassional motorcycle or two in the bed (kickstands up). Would a do-it-yourself kit stand up to four motorcycle tires? Opinions? I'd rather not blow $500 on Line-X if Herculiner will suffice for my purposes. Thanks.

Yep, I used to haul around my dirtbike in my old truck all the time with a Herculiner liner.

That being said, I would never do it again. Application was a pain in the butt. Make sure you prep everything properly (prep was the biggest time consumer). I steel wooled the bed, scotch brited the whole bed and then took acetone or toulene and cleaned up everthing. I then took a tack cloth to make sure I had the cleanest surface possible. I had an 8' bed and I bought the 8' bed kit but I wished it had more, there were some pretty thin spots.

I have a friend at work with a powerjoke Ferd. He decided to do his own bedliner and WHAT A MESS! Looks like crapola and now it's all flaking and coming off.

It was a pain to put it in and now he has to live with the aftermath of it not staying on. He is going to go and have it done right.

Sometimes..........CHEAP..IS NOT A BARGAIN.

Yeah prep is a pain in the freakin butt.......I had that stuff in my old 76' Ford......took me forever to get that sucker prep'd!!! Didn't really like the stuff either....and just like Rob said, the kit usually leaves stuff pretty thin. It'd help to have some more on hand.

Best advice is go with either the Line-X or Rhino. The other self prep/install products just don't hold up to the elements not to mention anything you put in the bed of the truck.

And - in addition to what has been mentioned here, a Line-X or Rhino liner will add value come resale time. DIY or un-coated beds tend to hurt the resale value,

Well look at it this way - you can scratch the heck out of it now and cover all of the boo-boo's with a new Line-X or Rhino in the future !

P.S. - I've had three trucks with Rhinos in them now - they've done OK but they've faded pretty well in the sun. I'm thinking about Line-X the next time. Not to say the Rhino doesn't do it's job of protecting the bed, they just don't look all that hot after a couple of years.

I've seen at least 3 Rhino Liners that are peeling off in small chunks - I say DON'T DO IT!

You might want to read THIS thread before attempting a do-it-yourself bedliner.
