Well I have two strange instances that stand out in my mind.
First I was 10 to 12 years old and was riding home with my dad one night about 2330. We lived down about 1 mile of dirt road with a couple of houses on the way. You have to make a left turn at about 1/2 mile. As we approached this turn there was a bright blue.white flash like lightning. I vividly remember seeing all of the bushes, trees, and weeds across the desert. When I looked in the sky it was clear as a bell. Nothing but stars and wide orange glowing trail in the sky that remianed for some time. There was never anything in the paper about it.
Second, I was 13 or 14 in my freshmen year of H.S. during a lunch break. A "friend" and I were hanging out by the gym (NO, nothing mind altering involved) when suddenly the earth started shaking and the building rumbled. It would not have been so odd if the teacher that walked up moments after this said he had no idea what we were talking about nor did anyone else we knew.
Neither ghosts, both explainable, but both should have been noticed by other people. Maybe it is induce by brain damage near the scar on the back of my head that no one know the orgin of.

One of my best buddies in highschool was named Bill Horn. He was a great guy, kind of a country bumpkin type, not too bright not too dim either.
After highschool I tried in vain to look him up only to find that he had been found face down in a ditch somewhere in Arkansas as a result of a, "Bad drug deal". Bill did not do drugs.
12 years after that while working I received an order for products from Bill Horn with "Angel Management".
Coincidence? NO! Fate......... I know where my highschool buddy is!!!!
Rick
P.S. Ghosts? Maybe, but friends forever

At the family reunion this year for my Wifes Dad's side the old folks were talking about how things were in the hills and hollars back in the 20s and 30s. 2 sisters that were in their late 70s began talking about their brother who died of a cancer back in the 40s. He was sitting by the window in his chair and began asking them if they could see the beautiful angel sitting on the stump on the hill outside the window. Neither of them could see her but he described her to them in detail. He passed away 2 days later. They spoke of many a strange occurance happening like that. Including stuff that happened when they were setting up with the dead. AKA: the wake before the funeral. You won't find many true older hill people around here that don't beleive in such things. Most of the areas they speak of now belong to the National Forest but we enjoy listening to their stories and then try to find the old homesteads and sites via muleback. You can still find alot of the older roadbeds even.
Colman, I believe your father in-law saw someone waiting to take him into the next life. It's very common for dieing people (even people who are healthy and die unexpectedly) to see things others cannot.

When my father was dieing of lung cancer we kept him at home. A couple of days before he passed he was laying in bed, totally spent from not eating for weeks, etc. His body was so exhausted that he couldn't even keep his mouth closed, it'd just hang open. He'd look at me with sunken eye's barely open if I spoke to him and he didn't have the strength to respond. He couldn't sit up, his arms and legs were getting cold, he was very close to passing. He was down to about 75 pounds.
I was sitting on the bed next to him and all of a sudden he sat up straight, eye's wide open, really wide like he was very surprised, and then formed this huge smile on his face and started to wave to something in the hallway and said in a very strong resounding voice, "Hi there young lady!". He then sat there smiling and stareing at it with huge eyes for about 1 minute.
Blew me away.
He had no medication, nothing, as he had no pain.
The next night my mother heard him saying hello to his grandmother and also my mothers aunt, whom he was very close to. Both passed years before.
He couldn't muster the energy to speak to any one of us but he had plenty of energy to acknowledge whatever he was seeing.
Now for believers, they say once you get over on the other side everyone age is reset to their prime years. That's why I believe he called that lady young.
I believe when we get close to the end the mystery will start to unravel, to make the transition easier.

Now, I have no idea if that's a true story or not, but I always thought it was kind of neat.
My Great Grandmother lived to be 107.
She was in a retirement home for 14 yrs with the same nurse on the day shift.
We got a call from the doctor that she was 'ready to go' and told him "Its time to be with the Lord."
We all went up that night and at around 3 a.m. she was doing better and talking lots. We all decided to go get some rest and come back in the morning.
Her best friend and nurse came in that morning and this is what she said my grandma told her. "Oh at last you have come and now I can say good-bye. I have seen the Pearly Gates and its my time to move on." She then passed away.
About a week before this happened she told me she was upset that she was faltering. I asked her why and her reply was; "Because the old girl down the road lived to be 110 and I wanted to beat her."
Her son, my Great Uncle was taken by cancer. I was fourteen, he was my favorite uncle. My mom told my brother and I we better go see him at the hospital as he did not have much time left. When we got to the ward we were told he was in the room across the hall. When I went in there I could not tell which one of these poor souls was him as they were all in that room for the same reason. Quite sad.
The nurse saw our confusion and came and showed us to his bed. I still did not believe it was him and I asked the nurse if I could see his hands. He had massive hands and fingers and when she lifted his blanket to show me his right hand...I knew it was him.
He was not conscious but then suddenly he sat up on the side of the bed and said; "Scotty, never you worry as I will be fine and my time is near." He looked right at me and smiled with his big blue eyes and then said he was very tired and needed to lay down.
The nurse, my brother and myself where quite shaken and we helped him lay down again. He took this big breath and as he exhaled, he passed away, smiling.
These two examples of a spiritual side tell me there is always something greater then us.

You can believe mine Hoss.
My father was always very polite and liked to compliment people, much more so than me but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes try
. Kind of like a case of reverse-evolution I guess.
In any case it made him alot of friends in his lifetime.
Whatever he saw that day he instantly recognized and was very happy to see, and like I said whatever he did see looked surprisingly young to him, which gave him the opportunity to pay another compliment and look so surprised at the same time.
It was just like him.
I'm glad it happened, as well as him talking to my late great grandmother and late great aunt a day or so later. Those things helped the family grieving process.
Everything happens for a reason.
