Diesel Powered Snowmobile

So this was my senior design project. We used it to compete at the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge in MI. The idea to build a quiet, clean snowmobile that is built on the stock chassis. We placed 4th due to not being able to control soot and did not to keep our E-score, which was one of the highest E-scores of all the teams. It was the quietest sled at comp and the most fuel efficient getting more then 30mpg.

Spec
Polaris Turbo LX Chassis
Kubota 902 3 cyl Diesel
Garret Turbo
Pump mods
Emitec Passive DPF and Catalyst.

HP-56
TQ-86
Top speed 65 due to gearing-red line 4k

Its the Polaris on the End-Number 11

Congrats, that is a cool project. Mine was building the two speed trans for our SAE Baja car. What is a normal MPG for those, and what did the thing weigh, completed?

Well, I know I didn't comment because I have absolutely NO interest in something that goes fast in sub-zero temperatures!

I WOULD be interested in SEEING the installation tho. Even tho I have no love for snowmobiles, I know what they look like. All 3 or 'em could have diesels for all I know.

Neat project tho. I'd LOVE to do something like that.

30 mpg is amazing for sleds. My 700 Mountain Viper gets 4 mpg. To be fair, I liberally use the throttle as I love that triple howl.

+1 on wanting some installed pictures. I would rather see that motor in a Ranger or Razor style vehicle though. There is not enough snow in my bit of Ohio for sleds anymore.

Cool project Purp! Diesel's the way! Is it sluggish to drive or pretty peppy? What's a "E" score mean? How snug is it under that hood? I'd like to see some pics too. What a cool project.

I live in South Texas--Corpus Christi, TX as a matter of fact. Not much of a need for snowmobiles here, but if you could come up with a diesel powered jet ski/wave runner, now that would get my attention!

I'm surprised they don't have snowmobiles in Tx, at least for the drag strip. The larger ones can be made to run on asphalt at insane speeds.
