Diesel 'newb' looking for input

Hi all,

new here, looking to purchase a Dodge diesel truck when i get back from this deployment.

if anybody has any input on the various models or years, or knows where I can get a good block of information on each, i would appreciate it!

i'm not a newb to cars, or dodges for that matter. i've had 3 Dodge Daytonas, and currently own a SRT4, that i will probably trade in. Just looking for some information on the trucks (preferrably the 2500 regular cab, diesel, auto or manual, preferrably auto)

1994 to 1998.5 is the cheapest to modify and easiest to work on, go with a manual transmission, far superior to the automatics and they can withstand alot more power with only a aftermarket clutch

Watch out for the 24 Valve engines with the VP44 Fuel Injection pump. They are on the 1998.5-2002 trucks. I might be wrong on the dates. Anyway, the VP44 is prone to failure and it costs about $900-$1500 to replace. I have a 2000 with a VP44 and it has about 161000 miles on it and i've never had a problem, so it's kind of a hit-or-miss on the injector pump failure. Other than that, the Cummins Turbo Diesel is one of the best engines ever put into a pickup. I agree with Logan about the manual transmission. I'm sure others will chime in with more to add! Welcome to DTR!!

Thanks!

I found out that forums are usually the best way to get real-life information, i started with XDTALK (very helpful) for my firearms hobbies, and here seems just as helpful!

What about the 07 trucks, with these new 6.7L engines? i like the idea of being biocompatible, but i dont know if i really NEED 6.7 compared to 5.9L... like i said any help and ALL of your input is helpful! thanks again

Any model year truck can be made to be 'biocompatible' really all that would be needed is new rubber parts, hoses, seals, etc. And I'm sure the 07's would be tons easier to run a higher percent bio than my first gen. although the results should be ballpark, if you did an apples to apples test.

Good luck!

IIRC you can run 10% bio in my 07 with a 5.9l according to the owners manual.

I liked the 5.9l when I was looking and bought one for pretty cheap new.
