Thumbs up Newb looking at a 2002 2500 CTD.

Hello all,

New to the forums here and I need your opinions on this truck I am looking at buying.

It's a 2002 2500 HO CTD SLT laramie.
-93K miles
-Stock engine and tranny
-Cloth Interior
-Body is straight
- IP and injectors replaced with updated dodge parts
- new brakes all around
- front hubs replaced
- Ball joints ok
- Remote start
- 35" BFG's with 80% tread
- Rear bags front leveling kit
- they are asking $12.5K

what do you all think?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jake

4x4? If so, sounds like an excellent deal but I would still check the fuel pressure on it and give the tranny the once over. Does the owner have reciepts? Heck, mine has 190K on it and I wouldn't take that for mine.

one thing I would like opinions on is the cost of keeping these things in good running order. i mean I can handle putting down a couple hundred dollars for maintenance or preventative maintenance but I can't afford to be putting thousands of dollars into a truck. I need something that I can keep stock and have it last. Is that something I would get with a truck like this?

Well, the main things that go out on these trucks are the LP, IP and "golden rod" (trackbar). I've replaced numerous LP's and put a complete front end on mine but I was just thowing parts at a problem (wound up being loose shock bolts). Anyway, take a good look at it and only you can make up your mind. One thing I would say is defiantely put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Last year I went through 3 LPs on my way to FL and without the gauge I would have more than likely taken out my IP as well. Even though it has a new IP doesn't mean it won't fail...they are kind of a crapshoot. My IP has lasted 190K and still going strong. When I bought mine I didn't know about the LP issues and drove it 20K with a dead LP (filter housing wouldn't fill after bumping the starter but I was too stupid to figure it out) but that hasn't seemed to hurt it and the last 50K have been modded. If it drives straight, shifts good and has 13-15psi at idle and won't pull below 8psi, it should all be good.

the two main things that concern me are the LP/IP and the transmission. Is there any way to tell if the transmission is bad without dropping the pan. I have a jeep with a 360 in it and a 46re transmission. Any idea if the 47RE would act similar to a bad 46RE if it was bad? My only hesitation is that if I buy a truck and the tranny or the IP go out, not only will I be out thousands of dollars, but I am pretty sure that my wife will kill me.Literally

He also says that he just replaced the filter, fluid, solenoid sensor, and the governor pressure sensor. Should I be even more weary because of this?

Again, thanks for any help.

Not really. I've replaced mine also...they are known to fail. I imagine he just did a service while the pan was dropped...hence the fluid/filter. I really wouldn't be too worried about it. Get it on the highway and into lockup and shower down on it (keeping it locked up) and see if the tranny slips. If it doesn't, you'll probably be fine.
