Diesel fuel tank

I have purchased a used 500 gallon tank and would like recommendations on fuel pumps and what type of filter I should use for this application. My plans are to use this tank during the winter to avoid the higher cost of winter diesel fuel.

Re:Diesel fuel tank

Check Northern Tool they have lots of different pumps, hand, 12vdc, 110vac. Once you find something you like, shop the net, Northern is kinda pricey. I have a 110 gallon that sits in the back of the truck to fill up a 300 gallon overhead. My pump is a 12vdc tutthill. Northern has a pump that looks just like mine but with a different name. So tutthill may not still be in business or was bought out. Good pump but sometimes I have to prime it if the tank is low. My filter is a 3 or .3 micron filter/water separator. Just a little shorter than the engine filter on our trucks. Centurian, I think is the name on the filter. I'll look at the filter, but I bet it has faded out. One thought would be to put your tank on a stand overhead and eliminate the need for a pump.

What part of the country do you live in??? This may not be a good idea - in colder climates you will need the extra additives that are in the winter fuel. There is a reason that they put the extras in there.

If #2 doesn't have the winter additivies you will have a tank full of jelly or a jelly belly. Truck won't run with a jelly belly. :'(

Re:Diesel fuel tank

http://www.cim-tek.com/FAQ2.htm

I looked at my filter over the W/E and it is a cim-tek. Here is a FAQ for filters.

Oh, my pump is a made by tuthill aka "Fill-Rite" 12vdc HD 13 gpm F1200 series. Mine is the red one with low flow, not the yellow. The yellow is pretty new I think as I don't remeber seeing them before.

Good Luck

Curious Jimmy, did you find a source for cheaper fuel? Just wondering, its a lot of hassle unless there is a real financial gain.

Re:Diesel fuel tank

Wondering if longer legs for the tank would be cheaper than a pump. You'd definitely have less maintenance. I was kinda looking at this, but the tanks I wanted to use aren't gonna be serviceable. You could always paint it, then put on a reproduction, antique oil company sign, if your worried about it beiing an eye-sore.

Re:Diesel fuel tank

I decided to go with the fillrite 12V pump and run a water seperator and 10 micron filter, not a big money savings, $1.17 a gallon verses about $1.60 gallon inwinter around here, so probably won't use the tank during the warm months, also have a small Yanmar tractor that I use around the house for mowing and cleanup. Thanks for the comments
