i heard this was from the times when it was legal to beat your wife...1400-1500's maybe

but you couldnt use a switch or stick any bigger than your thumb

Wow never heard that one..................it's kinda funny if that is true!! Imagine ( not saying it's cool to do ) but imagine beating your wife with your thumb ..........I got a pretty good idea where my thumb would be stuck if I ever tried that on mine

English Common Law from the 1600's stated that a man may "correct" a wife or servant with a switch no larger than teh breadth of his thumb.........
hence the term Rule of Thumb.....
at least thats what teh BOSS's law school text said....
