From New York to LA. Sounds like Brock Yates' "Cannon Ball Express" now known as "One lap of America". They still run it but have check points across the country usually at race tracks. They claim they only flog the cars at the tracks where everyone wears the correct gear. But some motorists claim to have witnessed a few participants exceeding the speed limit by 100 MPH on US roads.

It's been called cannonball run, cannon ball express, lap of america, gumball express 3000. Flog the cars only on the track my rear end.
I know if I owned a ferrari and I was on some of those long stretches of road, you can guarantee the throttle would be on the floor.
