Exclamation Cont. 1997 Tranny Issues

My friends 1997 1500 V8 4x4 Auto, is having tranny issues that dont seem not to relate to the actual tranny going toast. He can drive for about 30 feet, then it wont go, he shuts it off, waits, restarts goes 30 feet, ect. Tonight he's gonna check the filter and flush the fluid to see if that is the cause of his problems. If that does not work, what do you guys think we should do? He has a car to drive, but really wants his truck back,

Mike

Sounds like a sensor to me too......not sure which one but that's what it kinda sounds like. I had a 99 1/2 ton and that tranny was junk, might try to hook it up to a computer and see if it shows any codes.

Does it stutter and die, or does it do it when its only cold? There is a sensor in the throttle body, the IAC sensor, that can be taken out and cleaned, mine would cut off sometimes like your friends until I cleaned it. Let us know some more info please.

Tow it to within 25' of the dealership and drive it in and trade it for a CTD w/ a manual.

AutoZone will read the codes for free.

Iker, like I mentioned in my above post, when does it do this cutting off, when its cold, warm, or all the time?

I work at a trans shop and it sounds like trans filter is plugged up. Check that first. See if theres metal in the pan...you may have shelled the converter and the metal plugged up the filter. Good luck.

it cuts off all the time, how would we know without a code reader whether the sensor is bad or another issue.

Did he drain the tranny and replace the filter yet?

The sensor I am talking about is on the back of the throttle body, its kinda hard to get to, and you need to use a torx bit set to get it out. Then all you do is clean it up.

Those trucks are fairly simple, I had one for 4 years Get him to change the tranny fluid, and clean off the IAC sensor, and let us know what happens.
