Computer question

I have a bunch of .jpg pictures filed by blocks of dates in my C drive. They actually belong in the D drive. I know how to rename a picture but how do I remove a block of pictures from the C drive and put them in the D drive? In other words, how do I change the C:\ to a D:\?
I was sure these pictures used to be in the D drive but could not find them. A search found them in the C drive. Is there some way after a period of time that they would automatically move to the C drive? If so, how do I change that? It is not a storage problem because I still have 35.4 GB free space.
Thanks in advance for your help.

One way is to click on MY COMPUTER, click open the C DRIVE, get to the screen depth that the picture FOLDER is at (otherwise you have to do each picture individually -- it is quicker to take the whole folder.) Next, Click open another MY COMPUTER -- a second window will come up. Open up the D DRIVE, then get to the depth where you want the pictures to go. Finally, Click back on the open C Dive screen where the pictures are, click on the picture folder and hold down. Drag the folder over to the D DRIVE window you have open and let go of the mouse button. Your whole folder and contents should now copy over to the D Drive, and be removed from the C DRIVE.

I tried it right before writing this, using Microsoft 2000 Professional Edition, so at least it works on this machine.

Good luck!

You can also highlight whatever files you want to move. Highlight with the mouse, or hold down control and hit "A" to highlight all. Or you can click on one file with the mouse to highlight that one, then hold the shift key down and click on another file and you will highlight all the files between the two. Or if you have a group of files highlighted, hold down Control and you can highlight additioinal others.

If all the photos are in a folder, you can also highlight the folder.

Once you have what you want highlighted, point the cursor onto one of the highlighted files and Right Click the mouse. Select "cut".

Then go to whatever folder or drive you want to move the files or photos to, right click again and select "paste". This will move the files. If you had selected "copy" instead of "cut", you would create a copy without removing the photos from the original location.

You can also right click and select New Folder, if you want to put the photos into a folder on the D drive. If you have D open, right click and create a folder, then double left click on the folder to open the folder, right click and hit paste.

Stan,

Double check the camera program you use to download your photos. It may have reverted the download file to a default setting of "C" drive as the file destination.

There should be a settings area in that program to allow you to pick where you want the files downloaded to. Make sure it is set to your "D" drive folder that you want them to end up in.

Sometimes software will hit a bump in the road, and revert back to default settings. Especially if you have recently updated your windows software.

I keep my photos in 2 different machines for a total of 4 internal drives, and 1 external drive. I learned the hard way when I had a drive go bad, we lost all of our photos from a cross country trip.

Both of my Pc's now have a separate drive I backup everything to, the laptop has an external USB powered drive to back it up.

The external drive was a lot cheaper than you might think, I bought the external drive housing for 35 dollars, and a 40 gig hard drive for 50 dollars. It plugs into the laptop and any time I download photos, I plug in the external drive and copy them there as well.

The nice thing about an external drive like that, is that it is separate from the PC. If you pick up a virus that kills your hard drive, it can't get to the external drive because it is not connected physically until you want to copy files and plug it in.

Great way to keep a backup of all your important files For less than $100.00 dollars too I did have to wait 6 weeks for the rebate check on the hard drive, but I save copies of everything and have yet to be burned on a rebate issue.

I had one place try to say I didn't send the right stuff, but a quick email of the copies I sent, got a rebate check issued quickly. Rebates can be risky, but if you follow the instructions carefully and to the letter, they can be good things

Thanks Lary, will check that point out. Actually, for many of my pictures I do already keep them on two separate computers. Most of the pictures my wife takes (professionally) are only used for a few days and then are no longer needed, but as I have so much free space available (about 35 GB on this computer and about 55 GB on the other) we are keeping them for now and not deleting them.
The problem is not with the newer pictures, it is with the older ones from over 4 months ago. Those are the ones I was sure were on the "D" drive and now mysteriously have appeared on the "C" drive. I have no pictures older than 2004-03 on the "D" drive and that does not make sense as we have been storing digital pictures for almost two years now. As I get more time I will transfer the rest of them to my "D" and hope they stay there.
