As long as it ain't an aftermarket auto tranny thread, a three word story, a banks bashing post, something political, concrete bedliners, etc etc

Heck , I just go get a new one. 10 bucks at Wally's. I can't hardly get the stuff to clean it for that.. Figure it takes a couple hours of fooling around to clean it. Why bother?? haha

I have a 12volt one in the truck but it finally burned up the cig lighter socket. I had to put a 25 amp fuse to make it work and it melted the inside of the soccket. This one worked a little slow but was sure nice going down the road to have fresh cup. I used to have a couple 20 oz soda bottles and used about 16 oz for the fill and 4 oz to rinse out the basket.

Now I just have a 110v pot and start the gen and make a pot when the urge strikes.

I suppose I could get an inverter instead of the gen but just too lazy.

Our coffee pot recommends a product called Durgol. It works very well.

The wife uses vinegar to eek a little more life out of our coffee pots. The bad thing is the chanks of scale that works loose a few days later and clogs up the water passages.

We are going to look into one of those water filter pitchers. Fill it with tap water and in a few minutes it filters the hard stuff and makes it a little easier on the coffee maker.

Or ... I guess you could use bottled water. They sell the cheap stuff by the gallon at Wally World. I hate paying for water ... like paying for air .

Cheers,
PISTOL

Pistol- The trick against scales is to use either vinegar or citric acid and stop the machine halfway through. Let sit for an hour or so, and then turn it on again. If you let it run through the acid doesn't have enough time to dissolve the scales.

I did the Vinegar thing yesterday, (since I have no acid) and what I did was put the spout back into the water tank and let it run like that for quite a while so it kept cycling through. There was definitely some nasty stuff that came loose from the machine. Seems to have atleast made some difference.

I would NOT recommend that on many machines since the seals and the plastic part on the cold water side can warp due to the hot water. This can lead to shorts and to safety problems.

Alpine,
I think a lot of the scaley crud that shakes loose (at least from ours) is coming from the part that actually sprinkles over the grounds and filter and not in the water heater/tank. I might end up taking it apart and soaking it in the sink with a vinegar bath.
It makes sense to stop in mid process for the rest of the machine though ... I'll suggest that to the "Domestic Engineer" .

I really wanted to get her one of the european style coffee makers so she can brew some good stuff and also make real cappucino (not the sickening sweet stuff we have over here). She really got spoiled over there . I just wouldn't want to spend that kind of $$ to have the scale ruining it in a couple months.

Cheers,
PISTOL

A good espresso machine needs to run on really soft water to make good coffee.

I could talk to a friend who services the nice machines in the cafes over here. He showed me the water prep (ion exchanger with salt) to make good espresso.
I think the only downside would be that the nice ones need 230V.. but you can have perfect Cappucino, Espresso, Lungo, Macchiato etc... reminds me- 3 hours since last coffee

I regift the old coffee makers every Christmas. Put the unit in a bead blaster, knock off all the stains, repack in the box you saved from last year and send it collect to the inlaws.
I purchased a new Bunn coffee maker and two stainless thermal carafes.
I have researched a lot on this topic and I think it will look good right beside my built in George Foreman Grill in the truck. SWEET.

Scotty

P.S. those mints from the urinals work wonders on the regifted coffee makers...adds a nice scent. and...no blue tongue.

Our coffee mkr has an internal boiler which stores hot water, when you make coffee the water you pour in goes into a reservoir then forces the hot water from the boiler out through the coffee. A 12 cup pot of coffee makes in about one minute. The instruction for cleaning our machine say to clean ever month with vinegar and also to clean the delivery tube from the boiler with an 8 inch long spring that fits tightly inside the tube. It has worked flawlessly for over 2 years and we love not having to wait for the CM to brew.
