BERLIN - Automaker DaimlerChrysler AG said Wednesday it is selling diesel-engine maker MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH to financial investor EQT as part of a drive to focus on its core vehicles business.

In addition to MTU Friedrichshafen, the sale includes the off-highway activities of Detroit Diesel Corporation.

As it is, one already needs a map to follow the history of ownership for most diesel manufacturers. This will just be one more interchange to negotiate when trying to figure out who currently owns who.

Yeah. When I look under the hood of my Jeep, I see Mercedes-Benz emblems on the hose clamps, VM Motori stamped on the head, Mopar on all the filters and hoses, and Detroit Diesel supposedly had a hand in this thing too. Basically, diesel engines are becoming "mutts" for lack of a better term. It's hard to keep up with who makes what these days. When people ask me "so what kind of diesel does that thing have in it?" I really don't know what to tell them.
