Changing inner dually tire

Hi guys,
I'm looking at buying my first dually and realized I wasn't sure what was involved in changing a rear tire--specifically the inner one--on a drw. Does the whole wheel mount of the outer come off, or what? Are the brakes only on the inners? (Is changing tires on these a pain?) ???
Am pretty speedy swapping tires on a srw, but clueless here. Thanks for any advice!
Amy

Re:Changing inner dually tire

Well, the rims on all six of the tire/rims on the dually truck that you are thinking about is the same, jack up the rear, take lug nuts off, pull off outer tire/rim,then the inner tire/rim, now let's say you have a flat on the front and you are empty and you do not have a spare,do the same as above, put lug nuts back on inner rear rim/tire tighten, put outer rim/tire from back on the front. The brake set up is the same as your 3/4 tons in your signature, there are not outer's or inner's on the dually just two sets one set on each side,Hope this helps you, Rick

Thanks for the reply-- sounds like it's barely more hassle than changing a srw.

When you put the rims back on, pay careful attention to the "clocking" of the valve stems on the tires, or you'll be really upset when you have to jack the truck up and pull a tire to check your tire pressure.
The valve stems go 180* opposed.
(ie. one at 12:00, one at 6:00)
BTW lug nut torque on a dually is 140 ft/lb.

Re:Changing inner dually tire

If you look between the lug bolt holes on the wheels, you will find an alignment hole about 3/8 inch in diameter. If you match those up on the rear, it will put the valve stems 180 out.
I rotate mine every 9000 miles (in the pattern like the book says) and got 75000 miles out of the first set of tires and am well over 65000 on the second set. I also left the pressures down to 70 in the front and 65 in the rear. This works very well for me even with the weight I pull.
One word of advice, (which I seldom give) as you know these are very heavy trucks so make sure without a doubt that you take your time and make sure the weight of the truck is very solidly supported before removing tires or crawling under the truck with tires removed. I've had two sets of jack stands sink and the truck slid off the stands. Fortunately, I was not under the truck at the time and it is the pits trying to get them jacked up enough to get the tires back on.
Good luck and be safe.
