Carfax
In my experience, the only bad thing about carfax is that insurance claims don't always get reported. Example: I hit a deer and 1 ran into the side of me (it was a herd crossing the road). Anyway, it was like $5K to fix it. 10 months later, I total the truck and I'm looking for a used ride so I pay the carfax fee. Unlimited use for 3 months or whatever........so for grins I put in my old truck vin and it showed nothing. Does carfax show all wrecks or just salvaged titles or what? Someone eductate me please. Thanks.

Carfax is a ripoff. I paid for the service. I found a Dodge Ram for sale on Ebay. It WAS being advertised with a Salvage Title. The guy told in the auction exactly what had happened to the truck. I ran a Carfax on it and it came back clean. I emailed Carfax and demanded my money back. It did not show my 2001 had a tranny replaced at 20K miles either.

In my case Carfax went the other way, we were the original owners of a truck that my wife drove off the showroom floor. She was the only owner, and when we went to sell it 7 years later Carfax listed it as a salvage. We didn't know it had ever been to a body shop until the guy that was buying it backed out of the deal because he ran the report an found it listed. Contacted Carfax and they couldn't explain, even rechecked the VIN just to be sure. But they still wouldn't change the report either.
I was going to purchase a truck in 2002 that was located 12 hrs from me. Ran Carfax and it came out good. Had the owner send me receipts for the new paint job...I was suspicious that a 1998 already needed new paint. Was told it was to clean up little scratches because he was very meticulous. Well, I called the autobody shop and the manager told me the front end was destroyed...the whole front clip, a shock, among other things were smashed in. Never showed up for Carfax.
I believe if you make an insurance claim then it will go on the report. If you pay out of your pocket, it will never show up.
It will show you how many owners and when they became owners.
But it sounds like Carfax is messing up with faulty/inaccurate reports.

The local registry can do VIN searches for you as well. I found the online searches to be somewhat hit or miss. If it was already registered in AB, then the Alberta registry search should clear up any of those worries.
not really. Thats what I thought, Then 6 month later I am with out a truck. The best and only way to do it is take it to the police and have them verify the vin #s and the will tell you right away. Only down side is if it is stolen they keep it, period no ands ifs or buts.

carfax only shows damage over $3000 or at least that was the amount a couple of years ago. here is a "secret" that insurance companies can pull, they can have a vin wiped clean
guess we shouldn't be surprised about any thing an insurance company can accomplish. i was told this after my daughters 00 chevy was hit and the estimate came in at over $10000 i was surprised that this was on the edge of being called a total, i figure with that damage and the fact that the motor moved 8" into the firewall that there would be no question. this also brought up the fact of diminished value remember that if you ever have a considerable wreck , the adjustor told me not to worry my insurance could wipe the vin....real confidence builder there.

My carfax experience - When I was looking for a new vehicle (finally went with my brand new Dodge!), I signed up for Carfax. The first thing I did was put in my CURRENT vehicle, which I'd owned for 7 years, and beofre that it was out on a two year lease to a business...
Well the report showed that during the 7 years I had OWNED the vehicle, it had been sold FIVE TIMES! Funny thing is it did NOT show the initial 2 years when it was owned by someone ELSE! The first 'sale' was listed a year after I bought it from a dealer!!
I demanded (and finally got) my money back.
