Canadian Input Requested
Planning a trip to Alaska!
Is it legal to transport a handgun through Canada?
What are the laws in Canada regarding this?
Anything else regarding laws in general (border) that I should know before starting out?

From the CFC
If you are taking a firearm in transit through Canada – for example, from the Continental United States to Alaska, it is generally recommended that you have the firearm crated and shipped by commercial carrier.

actually you can own a handgun , but it's a long drawn out process with lots of paper work and restrictions to get one ............... then you can't take it out anywhere (my dad's friend has a 44 ........ he takes it out bow hunting)
as for the bears I prefer a 7mm magnum from at least 100 yards for them

BBWD.

"Visitors who wish to bring firearms into Canada need a valid possession and acquisition licence or a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (application form JUS 909) that will be confirmed by a Customs officer at the point of entry into Canada.
For more information, call our toll-free number at 1 800 731-4000."
I think Rattlerattle probably gave you a pointer that would get you to the above URL.
I would check with the 800 number and then make the decision to carry your firearms (& amnunition) with you.
Good Luck
Cheers MR. B

Same thing goes for Candians wanting to bring F/A to the States. Lots of paper work and rules and regulations.
BBWD, if you are concerned about critters (two or four legged) I would recommend a 12 Ga S/G. I would guess that there would be a lot less paperwork and hassles. And enjoy your trip.

In 1996 I carried my 12 gage and ammo. Unless something has changed due to 911, there was no problem getting through customs and declairing it. It was important that is was not loaded going through customs.

There is no problem with taking "long" guns into Canada and carying them around, It is hand guns the Canadian government has a problem with. Hand guns are a restricted weapon in canada.
