Can a gasoline car really last 2.5million miles on zero rebuilds?

I know Volvos and Saabs are great, but I am sure both drivers have been inside of the engines before, especially if they were using dino oil. Here is the article:

2.5 million miles is a lot for any gasoline car or truck. I guess they could have rebuilt it every 800,000 miles.

I would think if fuel atomization and oil quality are maximized, (and themostat, timing, and it had a light load), then it is possible.
Back in the 1970"s I had a Dodge van running on propane.
Before the conversion, the oil would get dark in 1,000 miles. After a few oil changes , running on propane, it would still be it's natural tan at 5,000 miles. I ran it to 10,000 on one oil change to see if it got dark. It did but only to the level of gasoline at about 750 miles.
It was hard to dispose of a clean/clear oil!
So, I think the atomization will be a key factor.
