Re:Dangit...what to get, a 2500 or 3500??

Hoss you know your just a wannabe.......... :
Well if I bought my truck to take pictures of it at night I might get the lights (no I wouldn't) But since I drive it and work it I really don't see the need for them. I'd like to see the DOT reg that says they are required at a gross weight. I know the 3 rear clearance lights are required for width. I doubt that the cow lights are. Like I said, on a dually they look good. On a SRW they look out of place. FWIW.

I bought mine to take pictures at night. ;D I don't know what DOT says....or if they're required or not. I thought Dodge put them on the SRW trucks just because...but I don't know. Doesn't really matter to me...I like 'em anyway. ;D

The requirement from the USDOT manual is that under 80 inches wide you do not need them, over 80 inches you do. From what I can see, you would only need the center three, the id lights as you have marker lights on the front that comply with the law. They are the always on with the head lights, parking lights.

To be honest, I never have understood what the purpose of these lights are...but I still like 'em. ;D What is the significance of the three center lights?? What are they supposed to do?? The outside lights I can understand...or the lights on the fenders of the dualies, but I never have known why the three center lights were supposed to be there. ???

LOL, those clearance lights are cool if you want to look like a tow truck driver Same with the big wheels. If you're a total hee-haw and don't care, then don't worry about it

Re:Dangit...what to get, a 2500 or 3500??

Oh well, the three lights are ID lights and identify the vehicle as a large vehicle over 80 inches wide. They are supposed to be at the highest point of the vehicle also showing how high it is. A Dually should have them. A single wheel truck is not 80 inches so does not need them. But pulling an rv, the rv should have them. One set of amber on the front and one red set on the rear.

The corner lights are marker lights and show the extreme width of the vehicle with amber on the front and red at the rear. If over a certain length the vehicle needs a pair in the middle which are also amber. These lights do not need to be at a given level so they can be at any level. It has become standard to mount the ID lights and marker lights as a set of five.

Lately it has become practice for some trailers to mount the ID lights on the bottom of the trailer and the requirements are being changed to require them at the top of the trailer.

They serve a safety function where on a dark road and pulling out in front of a vehicle you will know that it is a large vehicle and how big that is coming. That is one example.

Thanks HID; now I know why my boat trailer has those 3 red lights centered down low on it. Learn something new every day.

So....based on that tidbit of information...why do Dodge, Ford AND Chevy put the cab lights on trucks that aren't over 80 inches wide?? Not that I mind of course...
