Pretty much. Can you blame me? I mean really, what kind of a wingnut is really serious about putting a 6BTA in a Gremlin?

With a dry-sump system of some kind the I-6 could fit no problem, but I don't know if anybody's ever done that before.

The easy way to do it would be to use a Jeep frame and a Gremlin body (people've put the 6BTA in Jeeps before, and sticking a Gremlin body on top would be no problem), but that would kind of detract from the entire "good handling" idea that I was going for. Does anybody know of a solid-framed compact car with a good sized engine comparment? Or of a way to modify a Jeep suspension into something more rally-able? Hmm, maybe an AMC Eagle if I wanted all wheel drive...

It's doable, but the fact that Gremlins are unibodies makes them less than desirable for such a massive engine. But I'm an AMC fan, so that's the first thing I naturally thought of.
Not even close. I have two Grand Wagoneers, and I was originally planning to use my CTD as a donor truck so I could put the Cummins in one of them. They were originally offered with either an I-6 or 304/360 V-8, with plenty of room around any of those engines. But once I measured my Cummins and the Jeep's engine compartments, I found the only way the Cummins was going in was to either cut the firewall or eliminate the radiator. Forget an intercooler...not gonna happen. Chopping the firewall meant eliminating the heater and A/C. We can live without A/C here, but at -20 to -30 in the winter, the heater would be a nice option.

In a Gremlin, the engine bay is even tighter than the Grands. The Cummins makes the AMC I-6 (which is a fair bit longer than their V-8s) look like a little toy. I suppose if you chopped the firewall, moved the front seats back and eliminated the rear seat, and seriously beefed the front suspension and body/frame, you might be able to have a running, driving ***-Lin. Hmmmm, now that sounds like something you wouold find on a foreign **** site. I don't know if I would even want to be associated with something by that name. Of course it would end up being about like the trike built on Monster Garage, with nothing more than a Cummins, a rear axle, and a couple Gremlin parts hanging off that.

Do I get some kind of reward for rehashing a long since dead, rehashed, and forgotten again thread???

Yes you do- you get the "Biggest Waste of Bandwith for the Month" award!

You also deserve an award for using the most large smilies in one sentence as well.

As for the Gremlin, I do remember that the radiator would have to be relocated someplace... As for intercoolers, who needs one?

Maybe you're looking at 77-78 Gremlins that had the 4 inch smaller engine compartment...

Well how about a Pacer instead? As long as we are talking about a truly unique example of classic American engineering and design, might as well go all the way. I believe the Pacers used the same engine compartment as a Gremlin. I could be wrong though...I specialize in Jeeps, not the leftover scraps of AMC remaining after Jeep bought them, took their reliable, durable engine designs, then used them as a wierd experiment to see just how ugly of a vehicle they could cook up.

Just kidding...AMC and Jeep were always WAY ahead of their time. Jeep offered the first widely available 4x4 vehicle to the public; they offered the first 4x4 Sport Utility Vehicle (****** Wagon). They came up with the first mass-produced 4x4 pickup; they offered the first upscale 4x4 vehicle, complete with power windows, leather interior, etc.; and AMC offered the first all wheel drive passenger cars and station wagons. Not bad for a tiny little company many people laugh at...they pretty much created the blueprint most auto manufacturers are following today.
