Back support belt?

Anybody wear any kind of back support at work? What does it do for you?
I understand they are not to prevent serious back injuries?

Thanks

Back support belts

As a safety specialist ( my job), I can tell you that back belts are or should be prohibited at your work site UNLESS prescribed by a doctor. They can actually do more harm than good (false sense of security, impropper use, etc.)

There are several studies on the problems with use.

Good luck. Be safe.

I shoe horses for a living and have looked into useing a back belt for stability.
The doctor told me it would not be a good idea, because I would become dependant on it. I would say learning how to lift properly, and shift your weight(in my case)is a much better option. I have just learned after 17 years of shoeing full time that a chiropractor and message can do wonders.

The ONLY time I use a belt is when lifting very heavy at the gym. Squats or dead lift.
Other than that I've heard the same thing - bad.
Try getting into a good ab routine - build up the lower back. Much better than a back support any day!

I use one when I have to unload full trailers of equipment by hand. The belt works by making you lift things correctly. They are not made to make you stronger. I can tell you that my back hurts if I don't wear one while doing the same work......
I always have mine in the truck just in case....
