If you own a rifle you need to get to one of these events.
You will learn how to become a rifleman - deadly to 500 yards with iron sights. It's a 2 day riflery training course (you can go only one day if that's all you can spare). They are run by a group called the Revolutionary War Veterans Association. It's an all volunteer organization with the goal of transforming the U.S. into a nation of riflemen. Along with the rifle training you get history lessons about the vital role citizen riflemen played in the Revolutionary War. My brother and I went to one last weekend and came away amazed at what we'd learned and at how much our shooting had improved. Check them out at http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

cool find. I can't imagine hitting anything at 500yards by more than luck with a old kentucky rifle. One of my .300 win mag's is sighted at 500yards right now. My other .300 and my AR-10 are both set at 300 yards. It takes more work than most would think to hit a 10" bull consistantly at 500yds.
On a side note my Grandfather has a writeup from the local paper he saved from when he was in the Army. He received an award for being able to repeatedly drill the bullseye at 500yds with a opensighted M1 Garand. I tried it once and can tell ya it is work doing that with iron.

500 yards was nothing back in my younger days with the AR15/M16 and the M1 Garand. Older now and it's tougher with iron sites and my eyes.
Maybe it's time to dust off the old DCM Garand....
