Calling all turbo experts!

I have a little project in mind , I have a 94 jeep cherokee that i drive mostly every day, but i don't really care about. I;d like to find a turbo that i can make fit, but not sure how to match a turbo to the engine size wise?

Any help here? I'll need to figure out how to make the fuel system maintain the correct f/a ratio too , any ideas on that?

You need the engine volume * 1/2 the max rpm. Then find a turbo that likes that flow rate at the pressure the engine will hold.

say 4 liter engine that runs 5000 rpm is 4*2500 = 10,000 liter a minute, that equals 353 cubic foot per minute. so that is where you start looking. Now there are a lot of other issues to consider but that is a good starting point.

What size engine do you have and what is your max rpm??

it's a 4L , max rpm is 6000 i think , i'm thinking of starting off with 5-7 psi , but before i am done , i might want to explore just how much boost a 4L can take before massive internal failure

I think that turbo is in the ballpark of a hx-35 alot of ricers run hx-35's

I have thought of putting a H2E on my 360 powered jeep

With the exhaust and intake on the same side, would a turbo fit? Might consider a belt drive?

Something like an Hx30 comes to mind for around 4 liters.

I am not real familiar with the fuel injection system on the old 4.0's but how does the ECM monitor air flow? Does it have a MAF?
To start off, find someone who programs the computers in your year Jeep. The timing/fuel etc. will need drastically changed. For 5-7PSI your injectors will probably not keep up and it will need bigger ones. Now the ECM needs reprogrammed for the different flow rates... if the fuel pump can keep the rail fed. The timing will need pulled to prevent detonation.
Next if you have a MAF you will need to relocate it before the turbo so it is draw-through. Blow through is extremely hard to tune and is very sensitive to air temps. Then after all this hassle install a wideband and check your AFR's to make sure you are not going horribly lean. There is a TON of stuff I did not mention but it gives you a look into the difficulty involved in turbo swaps.

Now the poor mans way.....
Slap on your turbo and get it all plumbed up. Get a good progressive water/meth kit and run mostly methanol. Put in a wideband and tune your nozzle size/flow rate to keep your AFR's somewhat reasonable. The nice thing about methanol is it reads about the same as gas on the wideband so you can tune 11.5, 12.0's etc. It is also high octane race gas on demand so you do not have the added expense of running race fuel with your compression ratios. I know of a couple of guys that have done this and it will work if you do not go radical on the boost. It is not smooth or linear but it gets the job done without total meltdown.
